Show aerial aeria I tf two burned areas areas' The Bureau Dureau of ot Land Management completed a fire Cire rehabilitation project on November 24 The project consisted o of two burns originating from rom fires during tie the l e fall all o of 1976 The Jackson Draw fire started from rom a lightning strike on September 3 3 The fire was eventually declared contained by DUIs DUI's Fire Management Officer Roland McCook on September 7 7 When the fire was extinguished approximately acres were burned Of the acres acres occurred on State Lands and acres occurred occurred occurred oc oc- on National Resource Lands TilE THE SECOND burn occurred approximately four tour miles north o of Maeser in the Ashley Creek and Spring Creek on August 30 It was It-was was also a lightning light ning rung strike The fire was controlled controlled controlled con con- trolled within several hours and 26 acres of National Resource Lands were burned Due to the severity of the two fires Cires most of the vegetation was destroyed consisting of or pinyon juniper sagebrush and a vari variety ty of f grasses According to John Kornfeld Vernal's Soil Scientist the primary objective of the fire rehabilitation project is to restore cover of the areas to prevent an increase in soil erosion which often i occurs after fires Cires denude the the- vegetation Secondary benefits of the project provide additional forage for livestock and wildlife TilE THE AERIAL seeding was accomplished with a bucket seeder and helicopter The seed consisted of a mixture of grasses and browse and was applied at al a rate of 15 IS pounds pound per acre A fence will be constructed around the Spring Creek burn next spring to exclude livestock grazing for two years This will enable a better vegetation cover to lo develop The contract was with of Utah from Provo |
