Show Sports thoughts There always seems to be a great deal written about the University of Utah and Brigham Young University rivalry as well as about the Utah Utah State Utah and the BYU BYU- Utah State battles However r one group is not mentioned as as s much This group is the fierce Utah junior college rivalries I attended the College of Eastern Utah in 1972 and 1973 and the Snow CEU-Snow basketball shows were always the highlight of the hoop season The first year I was at CEU the Snow College Badgers won the traditional battle between the two schools The night before the 1972 battle in Price with the Badgers CEU had downed a strong Dixie College team which featured Scott Cannon a muscular center who had led Dixie High School to the Class A title in 1970 and Lionel Hollins an amazing freshman from Las Vegas Nevada Hollins went onto on onto onto to greatness at Arizona State University after his sophomore year and is now now performing his basketball skills for the National Basketball Associations Association's Portland Trailblazers Hollins is one of or orthe the few Intermountain mountain College Athletic Conference in the professional ranks So after the upset yin win over Dixie College the Golden Eagles were as high on the sport of basketball as they could be The CEU squad was vas was led by center Sid Hansen forwards Jimmy Horton and Brad Monks and guards Kohn Smith Dave Peterson and Alan Sperry The pl players on the Snow College team were Craig Nielsen a sophomore forward from Manti ManU High School and Joe Manning Manninga a guard who helped East High School take state in 1970 THE CONTEST was a c close ose one on the CEU home court but when the final buzzer sounded the Sno 1 College ollegE Badgers had shot down the highflying Gold Golden 11 Eagles for fora a a victory y j U p n t tC chance J fo a tn 1 t OV over Ui the Beers Badgers rs to Jq q 19 wasat Ephra Ephraim a place where here the Golden Eagles rarely taste victory The The first night the Eagles battled Dixie College at St. St George Dixie had a big lead throughout most of the contest but in the fourth quarter the Golden Eagles rallied to tie the game after being beings down by 16 points The game went into overtime and Dixie College won 88 to 83 The Tha Golden Eagles played Snow College Colleg the next night and again gain the contest was a thriller The College of Eastern Utah fought back from ten points behind to tie tie the contest 81 However a costly foul by bythe bythe bythe the the Golden Eagles with three seconds remaining in the game spelled disaster f for r the CEU squad Snow put in the two free throws to win the contest 83 to 81 CEO CEU opened the 1973 season against Dixie College in Price The Dixie College squad was led by Lionel Hollins and due to this fact Dixie was favored to hand the Golden Eagles a a basketball defeat THE TIlE GOLDEN Eagles surprisingly surprisingly sur sur- held a good size lead throughout most of the contest but Lionel Hollins who had been held under control for a major portion of the contest exploded in the thelast last few minutes of the fourth quarter to put the victory in the Dixie win co column Snow College was CEUs CEU's next opponent Snow was led by Jim Erickson Joe Manning Mark Peterson and John Bale The College of Eastern Utah key players were Steve Sorter Henry Mallory Dave Peterson and Ike Jackson The Golden Eagles burned the Badgers In the first half by completing 64 percent of their field goal attempts CEU then played up heads-up ball in the second half to gain revenge for forthe forthe forthe the double losses in 1972 to Snow College with the victory The Eagles lost to both Snow and Dixie on the road but the theone theone theone one win over Snow made CEU happy In 1973 Snow could have gone to a post season tournament tour if U they had had one less loss during the season and one of those losses was an upset defeat at Price This seasons season's Snow Snow-CEU basketball rivalry should be an interesting t one for local fans as Larry LaIT Larry McKinney McKinney loll is on the the Badger squad and other former Uintah Gary Huber Garth Allred and Duane M Merrell Tell are on the College of Eastern Utah team |
