Show Colorado River Wildlife Council manages drainage Basketball clinic begins Dec 27 21 Did you know that there is u a special organization called the Colorado River Wildlife Council Did you know that it was organized to promote sound management and use of all aU fish and wildlife resources in the Colorado River drainage and to study and give assistance in proposed and ongoing Federal projects Furthermore the Council seeks to advise and coordinate any activities that affect fish and wildlife in the drainage All the Councils Council's efforts are directed toward promoting and perpetuating the maintenance of high quality environment inthe in inthe inthe the Colorado River drainage for forthe forthe forthe the enjoyment of man and the welfare of all human plant and animal life The Colorado River Council is made up of the directors of the fish and game agencies from the seven state states that occur within the Colorado River drainage Wyoming Utah Colorado New Mexico Nevada Arizona and California are the participating states IN ADDITION to the state fish and aM game agency directors various committees are formed to study areas of concern within the drainage as outlined in the Councils Council's by laws There is ls a Technical Committee which is divided into upper and low lower r basin responsibilities a Fish Disease Committee a Protected Fishes Committee and ad hoc committees as needed Because so many states are affected by the Colorado River the Council is an organization designed to consider potential problems of the drainage and to promote the maintenance of high quality for all states Involved involved involved in In- with the Colorado River drainage FISH DISEASE COMMITTEE ll The Colorado River Wildlife Council Fish Disease Committee Committee Com met recently in Logan Utah to discuss fish disease problems in the drainage It was reported that the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery located just below the Hoover Cam was treated last March to eliminate a highly contagious and fatal viral disease called infectious pancreatic necrosis or The disease is particularly dangerous to trout and salmon in hatcheries The treatment appears to have been highly effective This was the last know source of from government hatcheries in the Colorado drainage The removal of from all hatcheries hat hat- cheries which stock fish within the drainage has been a major goal of the Colorado River flyer Wildlife Council Efforts are continuing at Lake Mojave located between Nevada and Arizona below Lake Mead to determine if a predicted decline occurs of In this last know bastion of the disease in the drainage Past tests conducted at Utah's Scofield reservoir by the Division of Wildlife Resources indicate should phase out of existence in a wild condition if the virus is not continually reintroduced by fish from an affected hatchery TilE THE FISH Disease Committee Committee Committee Com Com- also discussed and aM will recommend continuing field programs p by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and Brigham Young University to learn more about possible biological controls of the fish fisheye fisheye fisheye eye fluke a parasite in Utah and the Colorado River Basin The eye fluke fluk is not a major problem but it was felt that proper research now could help to eliminate future potential potentia problems The channel hannel catfish virus which is not currently in the Colorado Basin was discussed as an an area of future concern concern since it is transmitted through catfish coming from hatcheries and carrier fish are very difficult difficult difficult dif dif- to confirm through tests Recommendations were made to continue with the best available diagnostic tests and promote further study in hopes of developing more accurate diagnostic methods and also to continue the present state ban banon on import from areas of the country where the disease occurs The Fish Disease Committee agreed to study the matter more thoroughly and andreport andreport andreport report to the Council at their 1977 meeting The 3rd annual Ute basketball clinic will take place in the Uintah High School gymnasium from December 27 to December 31 The clinic will begin at 12 noon and will last until 2 pm p.m. The program will be for and grade students George Hughes Uintah High School basketball coach will direct the basketball clinic which is a Community Schools program Also Uintah High School will help with the clinic |
