Show NOT MUCH GOLD A Man is an Idiot Who Leaves Utah for Cape Nome The following Is from a letter received re-ceived by L M Earl from R J Nu gent now at Cape Nome Mr Nugent Is a thorough practical mining man j j he has had forty years experience I through Colorado Utah Idaho and Montana I j L In camp ten miles up the beach at the mouth of Pcnny river Alaska June 20 1900t arrived here on the ISth and found everybody hoPe and more coming There will be many a heart j ache and many sadly disappointed persons per-sons here before fall as the bench from here to York is worked cut as many thought if they landed here broke they could go on the beach and make from c5 to 10 per day when as a matter of fact they cant make more than 1 1 per day I speak from experience I put up my rocker and worked four days in different places the result was less than 51 per day It Is simply working work-ing over tallhigs Now in regard re-gard to the gulches I have been up Snake and Penney rivers I found fouc gulches up Snake being worked viz Snow Anvil Dexter and Glazier Up Penney river there was one bonanza bo-nanza but let me say they arc exceptionally ex-ceptionally rich So you can see that thie so far aa discovered is a good camp for not more than 1000 men instead in-stead of 30000 which we have I have piospectcd up both Penney and Snake In gulches that seem to have all the conditions that the rich ones have but 1 have failed so far to raise a color But still I will be disappointed if there arq not more rich gulches found I start tomorrow for the head of Penney I Pen-ney river to give it another whirl In regard to the tundra 1 think there is Ipts uf gold under it but there is no way vet found to work It On lop J there is moss water and mud and un i dcr that Ice So I dont know how to i figure on that except to leave it alone I shall keep on prospecting until fall i and 1C I do not strike It will pull for Salt Luke A mining man who leaves Y Utah ID conic here In this frozen Alaska I to mine Is a monumental idiot i T have not sren a lamp or a candle hero Thero is no darkness I received some old Tribunes ycsterdiy which you I mailed me ami last night 1 read them in my tent until 2 oclock a in and it was as light as if It had been 12 oclock noon |
