Pioneer Football at Union Friday! r J Playing the flute is just one of the many talents and hobbies of Claudia Meier, an student from Embrach, Switzerland. Claudia is a senior at LHS. ge Swiss exchange student looks forward to school year in Lehi By RUSS DALY Getting a driver's license - the American teenager's dream. Swiss youth are no different, but the process is much more difficult. Except for one bright young lady who has come to Lehi for a year of her studies. Claudia Meier, 17, is attending Lehi High School this year. The pretty senior is looking forward to Driver's Education and taking getting her license, which she may probably be able to convert to one from her native land when she returns. Driver's Ed courses are unheard of in Switzerland. People who wish to drive must take private lessons 0 at the rate of per lesson. When the instructor feels that the student is ready, which sometimes may take 20 lessons, the prospective driver is allowed to take the test and make application for a license. A driver's license isn't Claudia's only interest however. She plays the flute and enjoys swimming, snow skiing, shopping and reading. She particularly enjoys adventure stories and works by Pearl S. Buck. She reads in French, German, English and is even trying to complete a book in Spanish that she had started at home. "Someday I would even like to learn parachuting," she said. Miss Meier will probably succeed at that, considering she has learned German, Swiss German, French, $30-$4- Spanish, English and Latin and has been a member and a coach of a swim team. While at Lehi High, she will be studying trigonometry, Spanish, English, U.S. history, fashion merchandising, ceramics and the popular driver's education. Claudia hails from Embrach, a small village of 7,000 people, which is nestled in a long, narrow valley. Some of the villagers work on their farms or vineyards, but many people, including Mr. Meier, work for Swissair at the nearby Zurich Airport. The Meier family, which is completed by Claudia's sister, had the opportunity to live in Spain for five years on assignment from the airline. When the family started looking for an exchange student program, they found that they would have to complete numerous applications and pay a great deal of money to make the arrangements to come to school here. While on a family vacation in 1987 the Meier family visited with the Myrten and Vervene Grant family, friends for over 20 years. Since the families are so close, the Grants offered their home to allow Claudia the opportunity to attend school here. Miss Meier is looking forward to her year here, although she is a little nervous to attend a school with Wed. Back-to-Scho- ol night will be held at Lehi High School tonight (Wednesday), it was reported by Principal Russell R. Felt. It will begin at 7 p.m . an d following a short opening session, parents will visit with each teacher to get a thumbnail sketch of the class 2 "I'm nervous because I don't know many people or where everything is," she said. "I've been to the school and I know where my locker is, but that's about it." Transportation will also be different for her in Lehi. She is used to riding her bicycle to the train station, which is about 10 minutes from her house. She would then take the train through the mountain to the next valley, which only took about five minutes, but which had to be done by train. She would then take a bus the final part of her daily journey to school. And she sometimes went as early as 7 a.m. and stayed as late as f 5 p.m. That included day on Saturday for most of the year. Swiss students have a rigorous school system, with mandatory education covering nine years, followed either an apby prenticeship or attendance at the gymnasium, which prepares them for studies at a university. Claudia enjoys all kinds of activities with her host family here and is looking forward to the winter when she can try out the skiing in Utah. h3XPnl tarns (mbs m. tfnaos1 &jse3M$& mtkdb mmmmmmm en our regular retail prices (SPECIAL TAGGED ITEMS REDUCED AS MUCH AS 70 OFF) Includes fabrics only. It is available as a powder, cream and spray. Undecylenic Acid has been used for many years as a topical antifungal. When used as its zinc, calcium or copper salt, it is reported to have a great antifungal action. Undecylenic acid is available as a powder, cream, ointment and aerosol. Tolnaftate is effective against most fungi that cause skin infections. The exact mechanism of action of tolnaftate is unknown.
