KOREAN FOOD BAZAAR Saturday, March 31st 10:30 AM until 3:30 PM KIM COOK/U.S. Air Force Brad Barton shows an intact newspaper after performing an illusion wherein he tore it into pieces and then it reappears whole at the Federal Women's History Month Luncheon at The Landing on March 22. ILLUSIONS From page 1 176 West Golden Ave., Layton, Ut ter Barton suggests making a to-stop-doing list of things you can let go of such as negative thinking and bad habits. And he stressed that one thing people can let go of is the things that they can do nothing about. Barton then went on to tell a story about his younger brother: His brother fell out of a tree and became paralyzed from the neck down. Barton woke up one night as he stayed with his brother overnight in the hospital. His brother was crying and he asked him, 'Do you think I'll ever get married and have a son?' Barton said he wished he could say he had told him something positive, but all he could do is cry with him. One day Barton visited him and his brother looked different; his brother told him that he was going to live his life despite his disability. His brother is now married and has five sons. In his closing remarks Barton read a quote, "Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how we respond to it." "Live your life in the 90 percent of things you can do," said Barton. During the luncheon Pleshette Brown of the 309th Maintenance Wing was awarded a $500 scholarship from the Friends of the Federal Women's Program. She currently attends Weber State University and holds a 3.6 GPA. She is a widow and the mother of two daughters. When asked why she deserved the scholarship she stated, "I have lost many years grieving and merely surviving and now I want to live and make up for lost time." Crews are starting the excavation work on the new northbound lane, which will facilitate the entrance of traffic onto 1-15 near the West Gate of Hill Air Force Base at the 650 North Interchange, Exit 335, and assist vehicles in slowing to exit the interstate at 5600 South, Exit 338, in Roy, near the Hill AFB Roy Gate. Crews will work nightly during off-peak traffic periods, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night, Sunday through Friday. Occasionally, some work may occur on the weekends during similar work periods. Daytime shoulder work, which began early in March, will continue through the duration of the project and is expected to be complete this summer. Motorists entering this construc- tion zone should merge to the left lanes upon seeing signs indicating construction ahead. Travelers should reduce their speed and be aware of workers and equipment in the lane adjacent to the open lanes of traffic. Since light to moderate congestion may occur periodically, those motorists with time-sensitive travel may want to use alternate routes, such as U.S. 89 in eastern Davis County to 1-84 West in Uintah, regaining northbound 1-15 at Riverdale; or northbound SR-126 (1900 West), beginning at 650 North in Clearfield and regaining northbound 1-15 via Hinckley Drive (SR-79) at the Ogden 31st Street Interchange, Exit 341. Local residents should expect to experience some occasional constructionrelated noise and vibration. Work may be delayed from time to time due to inclement weather, material or equipment availability and emergency situations. Area residents and commuters can obtain updates by sending an e-mail to auxlane&restore@utah.gov , or by calling the project hotline at 801-673-0774. Barton's presentation, "Beyond Illusion: Your Life, Your Success," focused on how similar to magic, life is full of illusions and how these may affect your success. To illustrate this, he took a section of newspaper and ripped it into strips. Then to the amazement of the crowd, assembled it back together. As he did so he explained that tearing the newspaper is just an illusion and while this is not a dangerous one, there are some illusions in life that can hurt us. "In life there are illusions that can keep us from performing our best, so we may get looked over for that next opportunity in our career beause we're focused on the wrong thing," said Barton. He also discussed how anyone who has excelled at anything in their life has had more setbacks and failures than success, and he encouraged listeners to let go of the anchors that hold us back and imagine how far we could go. "Continuous improvement means we always are getting better and better. We are scared of success because if we achieve a high level it means you're stuck," explained Barton. "But that is just the baseline, you can get even better."
