ERIC BURKS 2nd Combat Camera Squadron F or Ron Snorgrass, an instructor at the Hill Air Force Base Arts and Crafts Center, teaching an art class is more than just a vocation or hobby. "It's something from the heart, that inspires people to want to create something," he said. Snorgrass' area of expertise is glass art, and his classes at the Arts and Crafts Center are designed so that even those who have never worked with glass before can quickly build a skill-set. "Anybody can do glass art," he said. "If you can follow a pattern, you can cut glass; then the glass basically becomes your medium, like a paintbrush." Snorgrass works directly with each student in his classes, providing his expertise at each step of the way, from selection of a pattern and materials to fusing the glass. Some projects can be done in 20 to 30 minutes, he said, while others can take days or months to finish. "I like to see the excitement people get when they learn something, when they do something that's impressive to them," he said. Linda Wright, a student who has taken several classes from Snorgrass, said while it's rewarding to see a project come together, she's usually in anticipation of the next one. "It's so exciting to see your whole project come together," she said. "But what I find is ... before I even finish my project, I'm thinking about something new I want to try." After taking the beginning class, Wright was hooked on glass art. "I wandered in here just wanting something to do a couple nights after work and ran into Ron and started taking his classes, and progressively kept taking (more)," she said. "I didn't know anything about fused glass and he's taught me a lot." Wright noted, "We both have learned a lot of new tricks and tried a lot of new techniques, and it's just fun." Snorgrass enjoys passing these techniques on to his students, whether they're an experienced student such as Wright, or someone learning about glass art for the first time. "I'm more than willing to share what I know," he said. "And if I don't know the answer, I'll go find the answer and I'll come back and give it to them. I'm not afraid of passing on everything I know to somebody else." "I think that's what teachers should do," Snorgrass added, "just pass on everything ... don't hold back." "I've got a skill," Snorgrass continued. "Why don't I put it with the students and let those guys learn something I never had the opportunity to learn when I was growing up? And that's why I do it." Davis is my hospital. As sheriff, I'd always had a professional relationship with Davis. Recently, it turned personal when I had a heart attack at home. When the paramedics asked me where I wanted to go, I said "Take me to Davis." I've always had great treatment there and this time was no different. Now I'm back to playing golf and all of the other activities I enjoy. I give the personnel at Davis a lot of the credit for saving my life. Make Davis your hospital.
