Heart and Sole Walking Initiative finds participant with best foot forward BY JENNIFER SEDGWICK D Civilian Health Personnel Services wring the month of February, Air Force Materiel Command and Civilian Health Promotion Services sponsored the Heart and Sole Walking Initiative. This program aimed to help prevent heart disease and increase awareness of healthy heart lifestyle habits. This program was open to all active duty and civilian employees at the base. The goal of this initiative was to log steps taken daily into the AFMC Well- ness Support Center at www.AFMCwellness.com . Once enrolled, participants were given a pedometer to count steps taken. To complete the initiative, 200,000 steps needed to be taken during the month of February. In other words, one needed to walk 10,000 steps at least five days a week. Individuals who completed this task received a Travel Fitness Kit, and of course, the benefits of good health and well-being. Across all the AFMC bases, Hill AFB was among the top. Hill had over 260 participants complete the initiative, with more than 50 completing at least 300,000 steps. Hill's top stepper during February was Susan Armstrong with 729,789 steps. Armstrong is an equipment specialist in the Ogden Air Logistics Center Aerospace Sustainment Directorate. She is an avid runner and has been running since 1998. Armstrong completed several long runs during the month of February to prepare herself for marathon and ultra marathon races this year. She enjoys training in the South Ogden area, and especially loves trail running on the Ogden Bench. Armstrong feels that running is the fountain of youth. She said, "I feel better for my age than most people I know, and I know it's because I'm active. This is a big motivator for me." Armstrong thinks that anyone can be active and can run or walk marathons if they just put their minds to it. Her advice for everyone is, "Start slow, and just keep moving." Civilian Health Promotion Services has some great resources to get you started with an exercise program. For more information please call 801-5869586 or e-mail Jennifer.Sedgwick.ctr@ hill.af.mil . |
