Wolsey STAFF WRITER The Jehovah's Witnesses have been part of the Spanish Fork community for over 40 years, and they feel that they are a goodfitfor the area. The local Kingdom Hall building of the Jehovah's Witnesses services a congregation that reaches from Nephi to Springville. "I would say if you asked any local Witness how they felt they were treated in this community, they would say that they are treated well. I think it's because a predominantly LDS community recognizes that they have missionaries out in thefieldas well, and they treat us well," said David Verdi, a congregation elder. The Witnesses have an active ministry and go door-to-door in the community, following Jesus' command to share the news. Members are considered active Witnesses when they are actively engaged in the ministry. According to Verdi, there are currently about 90 active Witnesses in the Spanish Fork area. There is also a Spanish-speaking congregation that has a considerable number of members. A good percentage of the local congregation members are in the construction industry, and donate their services building Kingdom Halls for other congregations in the western states, including Idaho and Oregon. "Periodically throughout the year, we might participate in four or five different builds where we donate our time to build Kingdom Halls. These only take four days — hundreds of men and women flock together and we build a building. That's how our building in Spanish Fork was built, and the one in American Fork," explained Verdi. Verdi outlined the process. 'The parking lot is there and the foundation is poured, and we take itfromthere. When we leave, we have a meeting in the building on Sunday, and then we go home. Carpet, fainting, sound system, electrical — it's all done in four days." When word reaches a community that a Kingdom Hall is being built with such a short time frame, the locals are amazed that the Witnesses actually put the building up when they say they will. There are no paid clergy among the Witnesses — all leadership positions are filled voluntarily by members of the local congregation. Occasionally, members from other congregations will travel to another area to go out into the community and spread the message. "Our young people study the same material we do — we're taught much the same way that ancient Israel was. We require them to gather together, young and old alike. Everyone studies together," Verdi said. "Family study is important as well. We gather together five times a week at the Hall, but each family should study together as well." Visitors are welcome at the Kingdom Hall. On Sundays there is a Public Meeting at 10 a.m., followed by Watchtower Study at 10:50 a.m. On Tuesdays there is Ministry School at 7:30 p.m. and a Service Meeting at 8:20 p.m. Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. there is Congregation Book Study.
