Lady Dons get two wins on home turf Brent Thurgood STAFF WRITER The Lady Dons fastpitch Softball team showed no signs of rust Tuesday at the Sports Park despite not playing a game for nearly two weeks. Spanish Fork's last game was played on April 10,2008 when they defeated Timpanogos High School 1-3. In fact the Lady Dons had only practiced twice in a week as Coach Andrews gave the girls most of the previous week off for spring break. Senior Deven Baum got the start for the Dons against Lone Peak High School. Spanish Fork won the earlier match up with the Knights 18-11, however the eleven runs scored are the most given up by the Dons all season. Deven started off strong in the first inning striking out two of the three batters bringing the Dons to bat. Lead off batter Tina Ferguson set the tone for Spanish Fork in the bottom of the first as she lined a double to the right center field fence. Entering the game, Spanish Fork's record remained spotless, while the Pioneers came in with an overall record of 12-4 and a region record of 5-1. Lehi's only region loss came back on April 1st a 8-3 loss at the hands of the Spanish Fork. Every region game is important; however, the outcome of this game would more than likely determine which team would win the region title. Temperatures at the start of the game hovered near freezing as a pre-game snow storm blew through the area. After some discussion both coaches and umpires agreed the game could proceed. Both teams were aware of the implications of the game and Lehi responded in the opening inning. The Pioneers scored three runs in the top of the first on four base hits including two doubles. Even the slightest letup may be costly at the end of the year. Going into last week's series with Pleasant Grove, the Dons stood undefeated and alone at the top of the region. Fast forward one week later and the Dons find them in a dogfight with Timpanogos and Lone Peak, all off which share one region loss. As luck would have it, the Dons close the region season out with two-game series against, who else, Timpanogos and Lone Peak. Hopefully, the loss to the previously winless Pleasant Grove Vikings will not cost the Dons in the end. Spanish Fork 9 Pleasant Grove 3 (at SF) Pleasant Grove struck first with two quick runs in the first inning. A walk, a double, and a throwing error put the Vikings up early. Amazingly, this would be the first earned run anyone has scored off of the talented sophomore pitcher, Adam Duke. Duke and the rest of the Dons found themselves trailing until a run in the second inning, and a break out third. In the second, Kade Christensen got on when he was hit by a pitch. He advanced on a Michael Hayes single and scored on a Selby Brummett sac. fly. In the third, five consecutive singles from Kirt Daley, Tyler Hanks, Brock Duke, Gentry Mitchell and Kade Christensen gave the Dons the lead that Duke would not relinquish. With the lead, Duke went on cruise control, setting down six Vikings by strike out. The Dons, wanting to make sure that the lead was secure, threw four more runs See BASEBALL • B2 Chad Carter / Spanish Fork News CONNECTION: Kirt Daley connects for a single in the third against the Vikings.
