Show JACOB RIIS DEAD. Author and Social Worker who Warred Against Wretchedness. Barre, Miss. Jacob A. Rijs, au-author au-author and social worker, died' at his summer home here Tuesday, after a long illness. Jacob August Riis became, through his work in behalf of the poorer people peo-ple in New York, "the most useful citizen" of the metropolis, according to a tribute once paid to him by Theo-doie Theo-doie Roosevelt, his intimate friend. As an almost penniless immigrant, he obtained knowledge of the slums at first hand and found conditions there so repellant that he consecrated consecrat-ed his whole life to warfare against wretchedness. Riis was the thirteenth child of a Latin teacher in Ribe, Jutland, Denmark. Den-mark. He was born in 1S49. |
