Show 10 The Signpost Monday, January 27, 1992 Stireman to play fourth year in Italy for a new team and a higher salary RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS $2750.00 s I ! By JAMIE MARTIN Sportswriter of The Signpost Former WSU quarterback Dave Stireman could make millions this year playing in the Federation of Italian-American Football. That's millions of lira, not dollars. Nevertheless, the ex-Wildcat quarterback, who is now entering his fourth year in the Italian professional football league, just signed a new contract that could make him the highest paid player in the11-year-old league. Stireman signed a one year deal with the Bologna Pheonix last Tuesday when his former team, the Milan Pharaohs, failed to give him the 25 percent raise he was promised from his previous year's con Swim Club looks for more swimmers By ERIC NALDER Sports writer of The Signpost Most people don't think of swimming during the heart of winter, but twelve members of the newly formed Weber State Swim Club can't think of a more enjoyable way to spend a cold morning. Monday through Friday club members meet from 6 to 7:30 a.m. at the campus pool to do their training workouts. Dr. Molly Smith, of the physical education department, got the idea of starting a club back in 1989 when she started teaching a lap swimming class. It was there, that many students expressed interest in competitive swimming after leaving the high school programs. It was not until last month however, that Smith received the student commitment needed to get the club started. Smith credits Clay Campbell and Bonnie Rector, both competitive swimmers, with having played an important role in C.A.B. The team from Bologna picked him up after their quarterback, Bob Frasco, decided to play in the new spring league here in America. The 16 teams in Stireman's division are each allowed two foreign (non-Italian) players. According to Stireman, 95 percent of the foreign players are from America. The American's salaries range from $9,000 to $12,000 per month, plus all all living, traveling and dining expenses. Salaries ' for the Italians go from $200 to $800 per month. "It's pretty much still an amatuer sport for the Italians," Stireman said, mentioning that the Italians also have jobs on the side, some of those even being doctors or dentists. starting the club. Campbell, a senior at Weber State, is serving as vice president and swim coach of WSSC. He emphasized that all club members don't have to compete but the opportunity is now there for those interested. Basic swimming aptitude is all that is required Campbell said. Swimmers that join can get a good stroke analysis and improve on their overall swimming techniques."We want members and we want people to come and swim," Smith said after forming WSSC. Twenty people are on the roster with twelve attending regularly. Smith urges those who have expressed interest to come and join the fun. Smith, as faculty advisor for WSSC, submitted the constitution to be accepted as a sports club on campus and registered with the U.S. Masters Association the first week of December, 1991. Since then the club has com- Stireman lives in Ogden when he is not in Italy, which is about six months out of the year. Since the Italian league plays in the spring, Stireman has had the opportunity to work with KSOS, and, along with Kurt Wilson, he broadcasts Weber State football games. At the radio station, Stireman does not make any Italian lira or American dollars. He volunteered for the work. "I'd like to do it again," he said. When he is not in Italy throwing footballs or broadcasting live on the radio in Utah, Stireman likes to "play lots of golf." Stireman does not know how long he wants to continue playing in Italy. "Every year I consider it my last year," he said. "If it works out, then I'll go back next year." peted in two competitions, with Rector, WSSC president, and Campbell setting state records in their divisions. WSSC looks to compete in at least one competition per month with the next meet coming in the first part of February. The U.S. Masters Association sponsors the meets and averages about seven teams per meet with each team bring about 15 competitors. Swimmers compete in age brackets starting with people ranging from ages 19 to 24 . From there the brackets move up in five year increments. "We're always trying to pump up the club," Campbell said when asked if they needed more members in WSSC. He encourages students interested in joining to contact either himself, Clay Campbell at 392-7361 or Dr. Molly Smith at 626-7361.
