It Is no longer Bhown to any onu except bv express order of tho secretnry. Ilelng ou parchment, which shows destructive signs of cracking, duu more probably to the making of n facsimile, ordered by President James Monrou In 1S2U than to nge or handling, han-dling, tho document Is jealously guarded, guard-ed, Many of tho names of tho signers nro no longer legible. Two pages of Jefferson's original draft, with a few Interlineations by Adams and Franklin, Frank-lin, aro nlso preserved nt the department depart-ment of state. Tho facsimile which was ordered by President Monroo wns laadc for tho purpose of giving n copy to ench of tho signers then living and Jhelr heirs. These original copies nro aoiv of great value.
