Children's Fund Primary Childrens Medical Center. 320 Twelfth Ave. Salt Lake City, Utah 84103 Dear Friends: Please accept the enclosed S 10.00 check for your penny drive (just a bit late). If you credit amounts received to any special district or county city, please credit mine to Kane County, Kanab. -- This is being sent for several reasons. First, Ive always felt a debt is owed to the people of Kane County, mainly Kanab, due to the fact that back in 1950 1 arrived there with almost no money in my pocket, still I knew I had to remain there as my draft number was due to be pulled. You see, when I left this city just to see a bit more of the US (I had hiked through 36 states), the board here told me about when I shoilld check with a draft board somewhere. Anyway, I hiked to Reno and back to your city, then hiked down to Kanab as I had read about it in Life magazine and just had to visit it. As I mentioned, I was nearly broke, still the hotel keeper allowed me to just sign the register and sign slips for my meals and he didnt know me from a stray dog. A young man told me where to ask for a job and 1 got it and stayed there for the four months until my draft number came up. The lady on the draft board thought they would call my number within a week but they didn't do it for 10 weeks back here, due to the fact that this county had nearly 60,000 residents. So without the help of the kind folks out there in Kane County, 1 could have ended up in a federal prison if 1 had not been able to get a job there or else make it back here to Tiffin. A fine young lady down there also gave me a bit of encouragement which posi with would be a small foundation (Small at this time) which would help purchase books etc. for the needy youngsters who might be kepi me from being a bum! Also, we have had twelve years of rough medical things go wrong and have come through, thus want to give something to help those less fortunate. 1 try to give one sixth of all my sideline profits to charity, and believe me. I've always gotten it back about ten times more. I repair church and office furniture, buv and sell antiques and coins, besides working at an automotive foundry. Ive just recently expanded into the world-wid- e beer can market, as they cost the young people little and the hobby helps keep them out of trouble. Ive had to be operated on twice for kidney stones and two years ago this May had to have open heart surgery, and my wife has had to have serious brain surgery twice in three years, first for a large tumor, then for a broken spinal line, thus we know how the money for research, etc. is needed. We are fine now, and I still dream of the day when I can move my small business to Southern Utah and possibly bring a little income to the county and enjoy life a bit more as I do feel much better in that climate. Perhaps it is silly, but the last three years Ive wanted to do something to show my feelings to those people in Kanab and all I can come up tively entering the ministry (all religions), but I dont know if something like this would go over. We have four or five foundations in this city just to purchase glasses for the needy but most people feel ashamed to go to the board with a request. Ive taken enough of your time and just thought I better explain a bit. Thanks and good luck on all your future drives. Very truly yours, Donald J.
