Show wm vivian meic melk tells stirring story at lake view meeting He eting noted columnist gives picture of war and peace experiences many people crowded the ward chapel sunday evening eager to hear the remarks of vivian meik melk british war correspondent and a daily columnist in the deseret news mr meik pointed out the contrast of our happy contented life here to that of the hungry un restful people of europe he we went nt on to say that people here should realize how fortunate they are and show their gratitude in every way possible one ne of the most interesting feat his ures of his talk was the story of his own convers on all his life he had been a skeptic and had had no reason to believe in god during the first british raid over berlin ii 11 went over and only one returned mr meik and his pilot were ivere in that plane his pilot was badly shaken and wounded and when he was being removed from the plane he looked at mr meik and said for god s sake give me to god to keep me from going mad this remark made him pause and wonder he ile told of another elpe experience ri ence during a particular heavy raid on london all during the raid he noticed a small truck driven by a young boy was always standing by ready to give him hot drinks one of the bombs that fell close 10 e by them knocked mr meik to the ground and the minute he re covered from the shock he looked to see where his young driver was and found he was unconscious and the small truck demolished after he revived the driver he found to his astonishment that the driver was a girl he then offered to drive her home after driving g through many burning streets of london they got to her home only to find it a mass of ruins the girl turned to him and said in those ruins are my baby my husband whose place I 1 was taking tonight my mother and father all I 1 have in this world please give me a god to help me again he realized that the ands of people who read his daily column were looking to him to give them some kind of faith and hope he investigated all the churches in england but could rit find anything to help him on a social call he met ezra taft benson president of the british mission out of curiosity he began asking questions on poleg amy later in his discussion President Benson he found the true spirit of christianity about ten months ago he was baptized in to the mormon church mr meik melk was deeply impressed with the welfare work that the church has done for their mem bers in m europe the secretary of state was showing him through the I 1 church welfare center in europ and made the remark that he did n nt t know now muc much a about the mons except they othey had more than one wife but if this were a sample of their work he d say let them all have a thousand wives he ended his talk by asking us to treasure our wonderful heritage 4 and watch our actions as the eyes of the world are upon us among the many who attended the meeting from out of town were president and mrs alex F dunn |
