They cost the government millions of dollars in lost time, data and resources. In a networked environment the whole network can be disabled. Some viruses totally destroy all the data and make it neces- sary to replace hardware on the computers infected by it. I feel that user awareness is the most important factor in combating this growing problem. As we become more dependent on computers to assist us in our daily business, we also become more vulnerable to computer viruses. I realize it is important for morale to recognize our military people for their accomplishments, including promotions. However, for various reasons, it's normal procedure to publish names one time only in the Hilltop . Times when the promotions actually take effect. Promotion selectee lists can theoretically change right up to the time the promotions become effective. This could prove embarrassing to a selectee to have his or her name published and then not be promoted. Space is also a consideration since it is limited, so the Hilltop Times staff tries not to duplicate, since it could prevent publication of other information.' The Hilltop Times does print promotion line number dates as an additional service and promotion lists as they are received from the Military Personnel Flight. Other ways military members are recognized include individual letters, announcements in Unit Commander's Call and posting on bulletin yi f boards.
