Seeking family of war hero SCHULTZ Dear Editor: of the angers My name is Gregory Williams and I am a member is to Battalions Association of World War II. The purpose of my letter see if you may be able to help me locate a family. In 1989, 1 made a trip with my World War II Ranger family to visit e cemetery in their battlefields. One of our stops was at of Halvor Belgium. There, my dear friend Thomas Ryan found the grave Brown Black, a 19 year old private killed at the battle of Hill 400. Tom asked me to take his photo at the grave of Halvor and have the picture blown up so he could send it to Halvors family. loWhen we got back to the states 15 years ago, Tom attempted to cate Halvors family but was unable. I ran across the photo in my album and thought I would search again for any living relatives. Tom him if passed away several years ago and I know that it would please I could locate Halvors family. This is where I was hoping you could help. Military records list Halvors home town as San Juan County, Utah. On December 7, 1944, the US Army 2nd Ranger Battalion attacked Hill 400 in Bergstein Germany. At that time it was the deepest penetration into Germany. Hill 400 was also known as Castle Hill. It is a majestic place with a tremendous view. When you are standing on the hill, the military importance of it is obvious. and Tom Ryan was an experienced veteran who had survived the Brest Campaign. Just before the order to attack came he turned to the young Halvor Black and gave him a direct order to not leave his side. Halvor agreed. The attack commenced and as they jumped out of a shallow muddy trench, Halvor was shot through the heart by a German machinegun and was instantly killed. Tom Ryan was wounded four times on that day and laid on the side of Hill 400 until one of his best friends was able to drag him to safety.
