Show As a quorum -was not present this morning the Legislative committee -to Investigate the coal situation in Utah adjourned until tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. Only three or four members were present today and an adjournment waa soon taken. It had been decided that the meeting was to form Its report to the Legislature. Senator Lawrence, who has been one of the prime movers in the investigation, was not present. Just what ' action wilt be taken re- gardrfig the coal situation is not known. Most of the members of the committee declare that the examination of the fifteen fif-teen witnesses has been very unsatisfactory, unsatis-factory, being merely a rehash ' of a much that has been known for some time.-.-' While some of the members ..argue strongly for a maximum rate, others contend that this would tend to drive Wyoming eoal from the market- The haul of. coal from the Wyoming mines will be of a greater distance and consequently con-sequently of a greater expense to the road. The haul through Utah is over high grade and therefore expensive. Should the rate be based on distance in Utah the railroad company hauling from Wyoming would ship its entire production produc-tion through the State and to Montana, where there is a great demand for it in the smelters. One thing is certain, there will be a number of general suggestions made by the committee on freight rates. It is probable - that Col. Wall's suggestion that ore be shipped at shipper's risk, that a flat rate be charged on all grades of ore and that the rate be such that each district shall receive the same rate, will come up. Senator Lawrence declares that he is yet undecided' as to what he will suggest in the report. Senator Robinson, who Is the chairman of the committee, declares he has given the matter considerable attention. He says he desires to get the railroad companies com-panies and the people nearer together and do what will be fair and reasonable for both. Many of the members will put their' suggestions in writing today and be. ready to submit a report tomorrow; tomor-row; Before the committee finally closes its work tomorrow morning several letters let-ters from various railroad men regarding regard-ing the present rates will be read into the reeord. It is also probable that anothei witness may be called. |
