Ensemble Human Theatres "Medea is an interesting and not entirely successful made experiment, and worth memorable by Anna Louises seeing for performance Miss Louise, an accountant by trade ui her first stage performance here, is an actress of considerable power. She has the voice, she has the presence, she can move and she has intelligence, and the result was an almost total eclipse of everyone else on the Someone once said of a performance by Hugh Griffith, the Welsh actor, that It is hard to think of a role In which he wouldnt be Too Much. Allows Indalgncv Well, Anna Louise has some of the same characteristics the flashing eyes, the comand she manding presence has a role here that allows her to Indulge them to the full. Her Medea is strongest In blood and scorn, weakest in those moments of pity and terror that delay but do not prevent the bloody end. But the production itself has certain problems, some of them inherent in the form, others ui the manner in which Juda Youngstrom, the director, has chosen to approach the play For one thing, it is 'l.eek drama. It presupposes not only a knowledge of both background and outcome, but an openness to certain kinds of motivations that to the modem viewer seem ludicrous "The devil made me do it would not be a comic line to the Greeks Poetic Drama 1 , poetic-drama- Ma t Successful of English speech and meter and the suspension of dsbehef in the language rseif all these things that iriR-- have discussed m regard t.i modern poetic drama pertain here, too Richard Kimsey, who plays Medea's aged Nurse, seems to me to have been the most successful at this. He has raised bis voice to the tenor range, tned to adopt the emotional et of the woman he is playing, and handled the role that is, as an straight would have. Another thing about potuc drama: it's a tear for young actors, who frequently have enough trouble making prose intelligible. Wendy Hammond stars as Nora, an Irish girl who goes to England to work during World War II. She returns to her peasant home and family in Ireland possessed of the devil. A conflict arises between priest and doctor as to the best way to cure the tormented girl. Author Frank Carney wrote the play to move slowly, almost motionless, in the first act, familiarizing the audience with Nora's mother and father and the rest of the people who know her. The background seems too long and it is only after Nora enters that the play moves. Mss Hammond takes hold of Nora from the first moment you see her, seductively g d standing in a suit in the doorway of her gloomy home. Her eyes quickly focus on her family, her boyfriend, as if she is about to denounce them all, then her mood suddenly changes and she becomes a kitten with a soft, endearing smile. A Bryan Gardner delivers well as Nora's concerned father. He manages to convey his love in a quiet way that comes across subtiy. The priest is portrayed by a seemingly tower nf a man Larry Roupe. Hu, stature, black hair, black eyes and heavy brows give him an awesome appearance as a priest - ered America's leading will make his Euro-- . pean debut in Faust at Convent Garden Opera House, London, on Nov. 22 in the role bass-bariton- e, of Mephistopheles.
