Virdon ordered recently Ellis to stop wearing hair curlers on the playing field dur' ing practice, warning the face fines he may pitcher from umpires if he continues to do so. Then it was Hebncrs turn to face Virdons wrath. You dont have a gut in your body! the manager screamed at his third baseman in the Pirates locker room Sunday after Hebner had cursed at Virdon behind his back but refused to repeat what hed said to Virdons face. Virdon told Ellis to stop wearing curlers and said umpires might fine him if he contmues. I know Joe Brown doesn't like it, Virdon later said of the teams general manager. It doesn't look good, but I guess Ellis will do what he thinks is okay. Other Otf-Bea- .I know the orders came from Bowie Kuhn, Ellis said, and I don't like it." A spokesman for the baseball commissioner denied any involvement by Kuhn in the matter. Look around, Ellis sail ''There are fellows who wear white shoes in practice. Some' wear jackets. Others dont wear hats. I wasnt going to say anything, but since they seem to be aiming in my direction. Im going to say things. Only a few years ago, ball players weren't allowed to wear mustaches or goatees, long hair or sideburns. Now all that is okay. Virdons exchange with Hebin the middle of a lockner er room packed with players came about and writers half an hour after Sundays game, in which Hebner allegedly called the manager a obscene few names, the result, apparently, of Virdons removal of Hebner from third base in the ninth inning for Gene Alley. Earlier in the season, Virand Hebner exchanged words over what the manager called Hebners lackadaisical play in a game in San Frandon cisco. This time, when reporters entered the clubhouse, Hebner was swearing loudly apparently at no one in particular. .L. Angels Rip Tucson Club is Tuesday night with game tune at 9 p.m. (MDT). With players garnering hits faster than someone buying steaks at a supermarket sale, the game started as a duel of home runs, each side collecting three. Marion Dnnn plenty of golfers who fit the' Forrest Fezler "pattern here ready for the tee off and aiming for a berth on the' tour. Perez, who beat Fezler out for the 1971 crown, is back, and now is a known factor and will draw considerable interest Another golfer to watch will be Gene Torres of Las Vegas, New Mexico. Torres is not a tour member but he is one of the best playing club pros in the West. He won the 1972 Colorado Open at Billy Johnstons Evergreen course and won his home state open three years in a row -196- Who Will Become Hero Of 1973 Utah Open? ' i What About Young Stars? The timing was perfect The only letter on the desk Monday morning was from the information service of the PGA Tournament Players Division. It was written toy Tom Place, public information director of the division. And the subject was Forrest Fezler. The first two paragraphs said: ; Forrest Fezler knows its only a matter of time qntil he goes the distance for his first victory on the pro- fessional golf tour. the my goal now Californian said. I wont be happy until Thats mild-manner- Ive won. The story goes on to point out that Fezler won 1972 and in his first full year on the tour earn more than should $100,000 althat this year he though he has yet to win a tournament. And then it adds a note that when Fezler joined the tour after being graduated from the Approved Tournament Players School in the fall of 1971 "few people outside of California knew of his talents, $25,542 was Known in Utah Well, just for the record, one of the few places outside California where Fezler was known was Utah. That fall the young California pro put on a great golfing show in the Food King Utah Open at the Salt Lake Country Gub and had the championship all but wrapped up when he let it slip away from him and go to the charging Ernesto Perez of Mexico on the final day. Fezler finished second in that Utah Open and went almost directly from Salt Lake to the tournament school and then onto the tour where be has already become a contender. It Is interesting that Fezler Is the subject of the PGA flayers Divisions most recent publicity release because ibis week the 1973 Food King Utah Open will be held at Its Hidden Valley Country Club in Draper and while there are no name players off the tour entered there are r 9-70-71. But what about the young players, the ones hungry for the tour who possess all the necessary ingredients for success in the big time? There will be a potential tour star behind practically every putter in this Utah Open, but there are a couple you might take note of in advance. Two of these are here. They are big Bob well-know- n Betley and Rusty Guernsey, both now playing out of Ogden. Betley has a crushing power game and is as long off the tee as anyone, anywhere. Bob is a native of Ogden and has missed qualifying for the PGA school by a stroke .two years in' a row. He has improved his short game considerably and now plans on taking another shot at the qualifying tournament. Guernsey is a former BYU star, a past State Amateur champion and a tremendous young golfer. He won the State Amateur when it was held at Hidden Valley and has always played the Draper course well. Watch for him. Jimmy Johnston of Lake Montezuma, Ariz. should be worth watching. Johnston won the fifth stop on the Western Tournament Golf Assn, w'inter tour, worth $5,000, when it was played at Los Angeles and is a big money winner on the WTGA tour. f 'd then theres Robert Risch who won the ifornia State Amateur and the National Publinx. 1970 Cal- There are so many fine young golfers in this open it seems unfair to single out only a few. They are coming from places like Coyote, Calif., from all over the west Butte, Mont., Evergreen, Colo., Casper, Wyo., Salem, Ore., Guadalajaro Jalisco, Mexico, and from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Phoenix, Albuquerque and Spokane. It is almost certain there is a Buddy Allin (winner of the 1970 Utah Open and now a big winner on tne tour) or a Forrest Fezler in the group. The fun is to spot him, follow him around the Hidden Valley course, and then follow his career later on. It makes the whole world of golf more fun. And more personal.
