No one really knows what the ' Anasazi used these towers for, although it may have been for sig- -' nailing each other in war times, or unemployment benefits. A second bill, increasing the maximum number of weeks of Emergency Compensation payable from six weeks to 13 weeks is expected to be passed by Congress and signed by the President this week. If that bill is passed, Utah claimants these sites again since 1874. The Four Corners School was asked by the park Super. Doug for astronomical observation. In 1874 William Henry Jackson, a well known western photographer travelled to the area now called the Ute Tribal Park (or the "other Mesa Verde"), to survey the area for ruins of the prehistoric Indians of the region. He noticed that the Mancos River Valley contained 12 of these three story round towers along the river bottom. Bowman, to help relocate these towers last year. Volunteers signed up for this exciting and important research project under the direction of archaeologist Bill Lucius of Boulder, Colo. The goal of the project was to collect information to help understand the use of these structures and to better understand Anasazi hfeways in the Mesa Verde region. The project will continue in 1992.
