Ia the meantime Deputy Sheriff Dai! freed himself from the elder Smith and opened fire, but he was orerpowered and rnshed to ihe rear platform of the car and was thrown off, his assailants jumping after him while the train was rolling swiftly along. The train was stopped by the conductor as quickly as possible and run back to the point where the shooting commenced. Dail was fonnd wandering about in a partially dazed condition and it was found that he had been shot iu the tern pie receiving a very dangerous wound, Crueoe Smith and Jesse Jones were founfl lying by the side of the re.ilroad as if desd, but they soon recovered consciousness. con-sciousness.
