Studenis hoih Beam ancHeacEi convict resolution byREVABOWEN City Editor Students in Rita Pella's adult roles classes at Orem High School found an unexpected dividend when they began teaching a conflict con-flict resolution course to students at Orem Elementary. They learned and internalized the concepts themselves. "I thought I was just going to teach it," wrote one student in a paper, "but I learned it." The student stu-dent explained how the conflict resolution principles were applied to solve a disagreement with a friend. Those results are very satis-' tying to both Pella and Kari Glahn, a parent who came across the program pro-gram through her work as a 4-H . mentor and helped get it started in the' school. ' Called "Talking With T.J, the program kit is put out by Hallmark. Hall-mark. It consists of a video, activities, activi-ties, posters, and hand-outs that teach nine different "trouble stoppers": stop-pers": Calm down. Let's work this out. Walk away. Ask for help. Here's how I see it. How do you see it? Show you're listening. . Use friendly words. Work out a winwin situation. situa-tion. ; . Catchy slogans and phrases are used on the posters and handouts hand-outs to help teach the trouble-stopping ideas. For example: "Work it out with friendly words; fighting words are for the birds." Pella said some of the high schoolers thought the slogans were Fashion students sponsoring sale The Timpanogos High School advanced fashion merchandising mer-chandising students will be sponsoring a sale in their classroom, class-room, Room 801, on December 4-6 from 11:30 to 3:00 daily. The sale is in conjunction with DownEast Outfitters, a local clothing store. DownEast Outfitters :nmvir1ae lianrla.nn trninincr fnr r"""" the students and teaches them about retailing. The students have worked on advertising and promotion,' merchandise selection, selec-tion, pricing, and displays for the sale. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Fashion Merchandising Department at , Timpanogos High. . . The theme for the sale is the , DownEast Outfitters Sale-a-bration. Parents, students, faculty, and members of the community are invited to attend to do some of their holiday shopping. shop-ping. Items for sale will include sweatshirts, T-shirts, thermals, flannels, jeans, and more. Some items will be less expensive than the already reduced prices at DownEast Outfitters. The Timpanogos High Fashion Team will be modeling clothing from the sale in an assembly as-sembly at the high school on Friday morning. ; ;ui ' j f y-kr f a bit corny at first, but they have found that they and their younger students do remember them. Glahn, who has two students attending at-tending Orem Elementary, said she has heard the slogans in passing pass-ing in her neighborhood. T. J., the title character of the program, is a radio deejay who happens to be handicapped. Kids call in with their problems, and T. J. teaches tolerance and other responsible re-sponsible behaviors, Glahn said. Second through 5th graders at Orem Elementary have been the ones to take the course from the 120 high school students, who came to the school for three weeks and taught six 50-minute sessions. (Sixth graders take the DARE, program, so were not included in the conflict resolution course.) "I just like working with the kids "said Erynn Andrews; one of,, the teen teachers'. "I like teaching "r them winwin situations and different dif-ferent creative ways to solve problems." prob-lems." High schooler Rachelle Anderson said she enjoyed seeing how the younger students responded re-sponded to the course work in-' in-' eluding their excitement when they discovered ways to work out conflicts. "I've learned the same things they have," said OHS's Brooke Schwartz, "and how kids handle things, how they think." Fourth grader Robert Wilson Wil-son said his favorite part of the course was "when we did feet". Paper feet were put on the floor, and conversation was used to help students switch roles and look at situations from someone else's point of view. Robert agreed that taking the course helped him to think about problems and get along with others. Principal Kim Roper was "wonderful" and "accepted the program pro-gram right off, Glahn said. A faculty fac-ulty meeting was held and teachers teach-ers got behind the program as well. With the children "empowered" to solve more of their own problems, there have been less "hassles" for the teachers to deal with. Pella and Glahn hope the messages learned through "Talk ing With T.J." will extend into the children's homes, as well. The students stu-dents are encouraged to put their posters up at home. . . "Working out real life problems, prob-lems, gaining skills to manage anger an-ger and understand other points of view, communicating effectively," said Pella. "As adults, can't we use those skills as well? "This is how I see it, how do you see it?' Wait and cool down. Think it through. These ideas can help us all." Conferences to be held at Orem High Orem High School will hold Parent Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, December 11, 1996 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the school. Teachers will be located in the cafeteria and foyer in alphabetical alphabeti-cal order. All parents are encouraged en-couraged to attend. To save time and money, parents are asked to bring with them their student's midterm grade report with the student's class schedule printed on it. lOthgrade '0: High honor roll: Sara Adams, Scott Bartlett Jane Bergcson, Noel Carvalho, Natalie Clark, Kimberly Copeland.i Carl Cranney, Melissa Davis,; Meagan Downey, Marianne, Duersch, Jennifer Fitts, Paige" Forsgren, Nephi Hardman, Michael I Helt, Brad Hoen, Carrie Jackman, l Joanne Johnson, Jacob Judd, Cindy" King, Brian Koralewski, Julie' Maughan, Corinne Mayberry, Wil-' ' liam McCleary, Nathan Nye, Traci7' Okawa, Stephen Otteson, Alberta Poon, Jared Pratt, Natalie Randall, Lindsey Reynolds, Whitney Reynolds, Brandon Rich, Matthew ' Sanderson, Secily Saunders, Chady Spiers, Nathan Wright, Peter; Young. . ,-..
