In practical terms, this means credit union membership will simply not be a choice any longer for millions of Americans. Ultimately, this unfair restriction restric-tion on credit union growth, may mean that credit unions won't be able to survive in the highly-competitive highly-competitive financial services marketplace. ' How important is this? Consumer Con-sumer Federation of America found in a recent study that Americans would save about $8 billion in loan fees and earn about $8 billion more in dividends each year if they moved their accounts from banks to credit unions. The reason for this is that credit unions, unlike banks and S & L's, are non-profit, member-owned member-owned cooperatives, and profits are returned to their members in the form of lower interest rates on loans and better savings plans. Now you see why banks want to put credit unions out of business. If you think this is wrong, you can do something about it. Help credit unions fight back by writing or calling your Congressman Con-gressman and both Senators and telling them how much you . value your credit union. .
