and all sine since last I 1 wrote you I 1 have had an unusually interesting experience that of swing seeing and hearing both littler hitler and mussolini I 1 wrote grayson that I 1 was going into berlin lin yesterday and I 1 am certainly glad that I 1 did I 1 saw sights that I 1 will never forget I 1 wrote all about it in my dairy this morning so BO I 1 will just give you a copy sept 28 1937 at A al frau frail awakened us and after we had bad eaten esteil our breakfast we were soon in the bus headed for berlin I 1 had to sit by a policeman who had the habit of smoking these terrible german cigars lie claims that he was in the world war and showed me a sear scar on his arm where a bullet had pierced he also claims that america had no business in the war we stopped at a little dorf and had breakfast the dort dorf Is on the edge of a beautiful lake it was still a little dark and foggy but soon the sun came out making things look much better we arrived in berlin about 8 a S m on unter den linden and were soon on our way to where mussolini and littler hitler were supposed to pass on the way and I 1 passed the zeughaus haus and the tomb of the unknown soldier mussolini was in the zeughaus haus at the time so we waited and saw him as he hurriedly hur ridly drove away by this time the crowds were gathering so we went to Wilhelm str on unter den linden to find a place to stand derlin berlin especially on unter den linden was decorated with flags everywhere both italian and german presenting a sight that I 1 will always remember we took pictures of 0 everything as we passed along it was only about but the crowd had the streets almost entire ly tilled filled A tellow fellow had a step ladder for which he charged ten to let people mount and take photos we took a few shots from it and by so doing lost loat out on getting in the first line I 1 finally found a plate place about six rows back many people brought stools to stand on during the wall wait and I 1 met an american from philadelphia and had a good talk with him by ten there were hundreds ot of thousands of people in the streets packed so tight that it was impossible to move soldiers were lined up everywhere to keep the people under control from where I 1 was the famous amous brandenburger Branden burter tor was plainly visible ten thirty pawed passed eleven thirty passed and the crowd became more dense ali awaiting littler hitler and mussolini several times great shouts arose form the crowds when they thought they were corn came ing we W were disappointed several times timea but finally the time came at about 12 A al M a big car carrying hitler and mussolini came iron fronk the south on Wilhelm str and made a left turn to go west on unter den linden everybody at once tried to see sec them I 1 was in such euch a that I 1 could not easily see however I 1 managed to put one foot on a stool an and d to jump up the car which was prece proceeded eded and followed by guards and soldiers passed so rapidly that it was impossible to get a good view I 1 was waa disappointed however it was a sight just to see the largo large crowd we wa had to wait tor for about halt half au an hour tor for the crowd to loosen up so BO we could move I 1 took a 9 couple more pio pictures tures from the step ladder and then we proceeded to go east on an unter den linden at the tomb ot of the unknown soldier we were fortunato fortunate in seeing the change ot of guard which Is done every two I 1 continued to page ITO five ELDER GURR WRITES OF HITLER MUSSOLINI MEET continued from first page hours and with much ceremony the guards must during the two hours that they aro are on duty stand almost motionless we took several snap shots allots and then at about 2 p in started toward the we took the S bahn from the Friederich str bahoot and were soon eoon there there were thousands and thousands ot at people already there the tickets to the olympic stadium were all sold so we wont to the malfeld where hitler and mussolini were talk in the evening the ground I 1 which covers about 70 or SO 80 acres i in the maifeld was nearly covered with people at that early hour the tha soldiers were everywhere on duty and also many policemen we took some more pictures and then walked among the people many of whom were stretched out on the grass sie seeping the malfeld as well a as a the stadium which seats was wag decorated with italian and german hags the malfeld Is west from the stadium and connected with it with the glasses that frau had loaned to us it was possible to see tor for a long dl distance tance la in every direction I 1 had never seen so many 1 people in my life and the they y were coming through the six entrances at the rate ot of hundreds a minute they reminded me ot of rivers running into an ocean the soldiers were lined hand to hand making lanes lanea for the people to pass through the time passed rapidly and soon it was time to turn the spot lights on at about lve five p in music began to come through the loud sl speakers which are placed at dif different ter points in the maifeld Ma Alai iteld feld occasionally the announcer would say some thing amusing and get a big laugh from the crowd the powerful spotlights made an indescribably beau picture in the center of the speakers pe akers platform is a high tower in the top ot of the tower are bells i which began to ring at six and kept going until hitler and mussolini wr arrived rived back of the speakers platform and on each side are seats arranged one above the other as in a stadium and there are also seats on the entire south and west sides of the malfeld Ma iteld on each side of the tower were flags about 50 or 60 feet in length on the south side were five italian flags in green white and red with a cross in tho the center of the white and on the north were tour four german flags ot of the same size sip shortly beak before re time lime tor for hitler and Musso lint to arrive arric the soldiers tilled the spats seats back of the speakers stand and then they stood st at attention with the spotlights turned on them they made a very beautiful sight with their bright colors flags etc shortly before 7 p in hitler and mussolini came in amid deafening deat deaf aning shouts from the more than a million people they walked out on the platform with their right arms extended in the customary hell hitler salute with the aid of the powerful 0 gerful field glasses I 1 could plainly see both of them that was a thrill that I 1 will always remember I 1 when the shouts had finally quieted goebbels Goeb bela one of reich heich party gave a short speech hitler came 1 out on the platform next amid deafening shouts of hell heil hitler from the people I 1 focused the glasses on him and watched every move he made he looked exactly as he does doea in pictures with the same stern look on his face ills his speech was i very short aud was mostly about j friede Fr lede or peace he stated that his great desire was that there should be peace alien afien he had finished another groat great shout came from the crowd then they sang the german national anthem deutsch land deutschland Deutsch land uber all holding the right hand extended as they did so 1 I did the salute part also when mussolini came out on the platform with right arm extended a nother another deafening shout came from t the be crowd ile ho quieted them with a wave ot at his arm and then began to speak ile ha speaks german the subject ot of his speech wasl waal also friedek Friede 1 ile he thanked the german people tor for not in the recent war II 11 he said that germany was the only country that had not made oba objection to the plans ot of the italians he said that the plan and desire ot of the italians was peace ile he wore ware the same type ot of uniform that I 1 have seen him wear in the movies a skull cap and a gray uniform his face indicated a very strong personality inclined to appear a little bit cruel in stature he Is very short very stern looking and w walks alks with a quick energetic step at the close of his speech a deafening shout a falln camo irom from the crowd and the people again sang the german national song it had rained steadily during the entire program and by this time ev ermono was soaked my coat and trousers hung like weights to me my red tie had become soaked and colored the front and collar of my white shirt my hat was soaked and all in all I 1 was in a terrible condl tion finally as the crowd started to leave the stadium and I 1 got under a small piece of canvas which several of the germans were holding above their heads there were several groups of red cross workers or whatever they are called on the job but they were using the stretchers for shelter from the maifeld hitler and mussolini went to the stadium where there were over people ale seated we could not see what was happening but it sounded as it soldiers were marching soon the fireworks began in spite of the rain first some rockets were shot into the air which made the heavens look smoky then the powerful spot lights which surrounded the entire were turned on making the sport field seem like a world in itself following this numerous rockets etc were shot into the sky eky it was a wonderful sight to say the least by this time or and I 1 were so wet that we decided to leave but that was another problem tor for the rest of the million people ahad the same idea we had to move with the crowd it took about an hour to move the distance of about three hundred yards traffie traffic was at a standstill tor for blocks around everybody was wag trying to get to the bahnhof bohnhof depot which was nearby however the crowd became so large that the doors of the bahn hot ho were closed things looked plenty serious for awhile A woman near me tainted fainted but the pressure of the people from the back was so great that she could not fall A young w woman oman lost her shoe and caused some amusement trying to find it I 1 think she went home with one shoe several times the soldiers had to get together and loosen the crowd to keep people from being crushed finally we were told that w we would have to walk to the next Ba linhof and soon the crowd was turned in that direction and I 1 were separated here at the next Ba linhof the doors were also alao closed due to the large crowd I 1 saw a car accident as I 1 walked along but the crowd was too great to stop to see it if anything serious bapp happened ened jabout an hour from the stadium I 1 finally got inside a and then thea atter after sm an endless time the train came when I 1 got oft off at the areld rich there was also so together we started tor for tho the place where a bus was to be we went iby by way ot at unter den linden and had the privilege ot of seeing this world famous street in the night decorated with flags the crowds w which h 1 c h had been listening to the b broadcast r 0 a d east of the speeches was just beginning to thin out I 1 was nearly frozen when the hie bus came at 12 p ni and I 1 warm up much on the way to guben the contrary driver insisted that we have plenty of air luff with the result that I 1 was thoroughly chilled by the time we reached guben at 4 a in it was a wonderful feeling to change to dry clothes and crawl into a warm clean bed well talks folks I 1 could write more about what happened but you will probably have read it already in the paper atheme at home and maybe have seen I 1 the program in the malfeld in the movies it if you get a chance to see the news WWII with that dont miss it I 1 feel a little groggy tonight as a result of boing being up lip last night so will say good night my gesundheit health ls OX OK as usual I 1 even get a bad cold from the soaking
