Show Page 2 - Millard County I SPS Thurs Jan 9 1986 Teacher to Parent LETTERS Helping your child succeed jS by Betty Condie President Utah Education Association My most vivid and lasting memories from school days are about the limes I performed I remember my chicken costume from grade school and my costume from a Sigmund Romberg high school opera Is there educational value in the performing arts? Definitely! However support for performing arts in schools is dissolving in some communities Increasing academic and emphasis on the quirements “basics” is moving the arts to a secondary position in those places Kids want to perform and they should perform They learn a lot from it They learn dedication from playing in the school band They learn teamwork from the modern dance concert They learn that top performance requires work and effort in putting a school play together They learn commitment to a cause during all those hours of glee club practice Those arc valuable lessons No make that invaluable lessons What’s more virtually every student in the performing arts experiences Delta Area Bt Reed Jctlrrv sweet success Becoming a winner is one of the most important experiences in school and life Students in the performing arls also learn the importance of discipline perserving in a quest Many of the best performing arts programs in schools use the talcnds of social studies or English speech science teachers They select techniques or events from their subject areas for adaptation to a play a musical or a debate As early as first grade students should be asked to dramatize a poem for a school assembly By fourth grade for the they should be auditioning Fourth elementary school orchestra graders might even consult with high school teachers about the best preparation for earning a place in the high school orchestra Performing arts are necessary for education and every community should value them support them and if necessary fight for them WE'ttTHE® i ' j Fillmore Area Bj Jm T Rogers If we had to pay for the privilege of seeing the full moon rise over the Oak City mountains only one night in our lives if we could see the navy blue night sky with all the stars the Milky Way the north star and the big dipper we would save for a lifetime and treasure the experience for the rest of our lives If we were told how red and gold and green the canyons are in October if we had not seen we would not believe If we could spend one day out of a lifetime we would cherish and live for that wonderful day If we were given one day to see the deep blue of our desert sky the clouds billowing white clouds storms that move across our valley we would wait with great anticipation and remember that day all the days of our lives If only one morning of our lives after a heavy snowfall with everything covered with a blanket of sparkling whiteness it would remain in our memory forever When our world was created this desert where we are privileged to live we were not given red rocks great pines meadows of flowers or mirror lakes The Father must have said “There is not much but greasewood alkali and a winding river so put beauty into their hearts so they will love this place for it is a good place We will give them sky wind and rain snow and the changing seasons storm clouds that billow and move across the valley If you do not find beauty look into your own heart and then look up Mary Henrie Finally some sun Average is 134 We had 2044 inches of precipitation for 1985 Average is 1451 We had 8” of snow We have had six years of above average precipitation This year is the sixth wettest since Fillmore records began in 1892 JAN 2 37 19 36 20 Though it wasn’t a record West Millard County saw a stretch of 18 days before the sun favored us with a warm day Jan 2 1986 Weatherman Reed Jeffery said that lingering snow cover and colder than to average temperatures contributed the foggy sunless days On January 2 1986 read a letter addressed to the editor of the Chronicle Progress from Kevin L Miller The let3 ter discussed the showing of PG I’m no Jean Dixon who has earned fame and fortune in making predictions regarding political figures actors and actresses etc I’m just a plain ol’ housewife who observes life in west Millard County Based on some of those observations I would like to make some predictions for 1986 Here we go! I predict that 1986 will find a policy established by our Millard Bocrd of Education regarding AIDS This is serious “stuff’ and should be faced calmly rather than after the fact The public is ignorant of this debilitating disease except we all know it’s something to fear and rightly so predict that the school board will the vite medical community to a meeting to learn all that is known about the disease before making their decision Is the disease contracted other than by sexual activity is of paramount Would a simple papercut importance open the door to the disease if a person came in contact with an AIDS victim? Is the disease carried in urine and feces? Important? Important I predict 1986 will find Delta businesses supporting each other as SD Shame!! Wagner of Shame! Layne Moody of These two men were last seen in Manti Friday night dressed in black and white stripes trying to pass themselves off as high school basketball officials but to Millard High fans players and coaches they are bandits!! Criminals dressed inthe they stole wrong kind of what could have been a Millard victory as the Eagles lost to Manti This is not sour grapes This is not an attempt to downplay the Templars victory as Manti improved their season in basketball when But record to one team is called for five technical fouls and their opponents given nine (they made eight) and the ball twice (Manti scored each time) is it a gift of 12 points or highway robbery? It proved to be the deciding factor as the Eagles dropped their First game of lit season Millard's downfall started in the second quarter With the Templars with the ball leading by five points Official Layne Moody calls Manti for an offenseive screen and the ball should be awarded to Millard Moody is overruled by Offical Wagner!! Millard is called for an illegal screen (an impossible call if your team an offensive doesn’t have the man can screen) Moody being overruled by Wagner refused to question the call line went Manti to the to shoot and At this point of the contest Millard should have stopped the game and gone home “AN When questioning the call OFFENSIVE SCREEN” Coach Rose was assessed his first technical Sitting down and trying to get an explanation was Coach Rose awarded another technical foul for “leaving the bench”!! TluirUjy si Publisher Susan predict that an education program begin for the Delta Police Department so that all officers absolutely know the difference between a “maggot" and a “human" So help me I cannot sec how the two can be confused as a maggot is the legless larvae of the housefly and a human is God’s greatest creation This educational prothat gram will include admonitions there really isn’t room on the Della Police Force for a “TJ Hooker” or a “Hunter” So I predict And for one (Inal prediction we’ll go nationwide We frequently see appeals by some of our television and movie stars to join the battle against poverty I predict in Third World Countries that the American public will “catch fire” about fellow Americans living in poverty I predict we’ll see Joan Collins and Bill Cosby making appeals for American children We’ll see Nancy Reagan providing medical services for American children We’ll see Pres Reagan begin a press conference without a That’s it Name withheld by request w ill Mark Advertising Riley Wood Jean Smith t Sales Legal Billing Layout Design FiBmore Office Manager Evelyn Maliet Receivable Deb Greathouse Accounts Rita BuBcreek Circulation Circulation Commercial Comp Production Printing Dutson Shellie In Advance Subscriptions SIS 00 per year In County 1 00 per 6 months In County of 00 per 00 per 6 SIS County County Box 249 points at The second half was the same In the third quarter the Eagles could not cut into the Manti lead The quarter ended with the Templars leading Shawn Then it happened again Rushton scored but the basket was disallowed and he was called for a foul and was Coach Rose called bending over to talk to his ballclub when foul he was again hit with a technical Coach Rose was kicked out of the contest) (more than two technical fouls of the coach is an automatic dismissal) Asking for an explanation Coach Rose is again hit with a technical his fourth of the hit three of the four Manti again night and fouls got the ball scored Millard was able to cut the lead to 10 points They lost the contest It looked as if Moody and Wagner had it in for the Eagles club It’s a crime to allow this quality of officiating to continue in this league An investigation into the integrity and the competence of these two “officials” should be done by the High School League of Officials To show you the quality of character we have school officiating our ycung high athclctcs Layne Moody after kicking Coach Rose out of the contest turned his back and gave an "obscene" hand gesture The Eagles faced more problems than just the officials Friday in Manti They left Fillmore and traveled through the fog to the Templars’ home court After sitting around for five hours and watching two basketball games (the Freshmen and JV games) the Eagles played like they were in the still “fog” All of the team appeared tired and a step slow throughout the contest When Manti had built up the lead in the second quarter the Eagles were unable to pressure the Templars or stall type of game stop their in Shawn Rushton led the Eagles scoring with 14 points followed by Jason McGinn’s II points The Templars had five players in double figures The Eagles lost their first game of the season and saw their record slip to George Russell IT'S NE3 LR TOO LATE to find your shape Come to exercise classes Mon thru Fri 9:00 am & 10:30 am also evening classes at 5:30 pm Classes located in Mom’s Day Care 800 N 100 W ask Delta Call or for Shellie Football Circulation Julie Ward to the Millard players and bench Arc these the type of individuals we want to teach Due to this “sportsmanship”? game’s circumstances neither Moody or Wagner should be allowed to officiate at another Eagles’ contest!!
