However, the Mustangs Mus-tangs galloped away with the win, 60-46. iners lose (1) Gilvarry (2) the game The Park City basketball team didn't win against North Rich last Friday. The score was 60-46. The Miners displayed a lot of "didn'ts" against the visiting Mustangs at Park City High School, according to Coach Bruce Reid. They didn't play well offensively; they didn't attack North Rich's zone defense; they didn't match up well defensively defen-sively against the larger Mustangs; they didn't rebound well; their full-court full-court press didn't stop North Rich's offense and ultimately they didn't win the game. The first, quarter started joff badly for the Miners. After Af-ter some questionable fouls called on Park City, Reid protested and was slapped with a technical. While Park City was shooting shoot-ing poorly, so was North Rich and the Miners were down only 7-10 midway through the quarter. The Mustangs pulled away to a 13-7 lead with less than two minutes in the quarter, but Park City's Chris Cooper cut the gap to 13-9 and teammate Bill Simmons tied the game 13-13 before the end of the quarter. Park City scrapped for its shots in the second quarter, working the ball around against North Rich's zone defense. Park City center Pete Gilvarry began to rip down defensive rebounds. But, at the other end of the court the Miners were victimized vic-timized by poor shooting, missing lay-up after lay-up. By the half they had let the point margin slip to 30-19. Less than two minutes into the third quarter Gilvarry twisted his ankle while defending a North Rich player. The Miners have lost him for the remainder of the season: he was later diagnosed as having a fracture. frac-ture. With Gilvarry went Park City's rebounding ability. Things deteriorated for the Miners. They were forced to a full-court press .to try to cause a turnover.. However, the Mustangs were able to break the press and began lengthening their lead. In the fourth the Miners, playing catch-up ball, were hustling but hitting few baskets. With five minutes left in the game, they were still down 10 points, 47-37. In trying to steal the ball, the Miners fouled the Mustangs and put them at the free throw line. When North Rich completed com-pleted a three point play, making it 52-37, Coach Reid burrowed his head in his hands and the Miners watched watch-ed as time ticked slowly off the clock. The game ended en-ded 60-46 with Park City's region record dropping to 1-4. Chris Cooper led the team with 19 points. Bill Simmons had nine points and Matt Mapstone added eight. North Rich upped its record to 4-1, good for second place behind South Summit. North Summit is third, South Rich fourth, Park City fifth, and Manila sixth. Park City faces the first- place team Friday at the high school. Earlier in the season the Miners lost by 38 points to South Summit. But Reid hopes that enthusiasm will help the Miners this time around. "This is a pride week of practice for us," said Reid, "We want to show South Summit that we aren't that bad. We need to play with a lot of intensity and enthusiasm." en-thusiasm." For the second half of the season, Reid wants to see the Miners play with more consistency, con-sistency, score more points per game, and win enough games to get into the region tournament.
