Show Vernal Express Wednesday, August 1 6. 2000 5 Millennial Jamboral attracts Uintah Scouts By Kathleen Irving Over 450 Uintah District Boy Scouts and their leaders attended the Utah National Parks Council Millennial Jamboral in a "dust bowl" outside Fillmore last week. The three-day event attracted more the 35,000 scouts from throughout Utah, other western states and countries as far away as Tahiti. A major attraction at the Jamboral was a 40-foot climbing wall and repelling tower built by members of the Uintah District. The brainchild of Cliff Tobler and Dennis Augustus, it was immensely popular with older scouts and even a few adventurous adults. Both television and print media flocked to the tower site to take photographs and interview inter-view boys and the tower's builders. One side, of the steel tower, which was the highest point at the Jamboral site, was fitted with fiberglass fiber-glass rocks bolted to sheets of plywood. ply-wood. Climbers were strapped into safety harnesses, then climbed to the top of the tower use the rocks to gain footing. After making the summit, sum-mit, they repelled to the ground. Tobler estimated that seven to eight hundred people climbed the tower over the three days of the Jamboral. It was staffed continuously continuous-ly with between eight and ten volunteers, vol-unteers, who spent most of their time taking people up and down, although they were also called upon to haul up those few who couldn't quite overcome their fears. Every precaution was taken to assure the safety of climbers, all of whom were secured into waist harnesses har-nesses and relayed from the ground. Tobler said the farthest a person could have fallen was about six inches. No injuries were reported. Climbers came to trust those helping help-ing them, and the ropes as they learned climbing and repelling skills. Similar climbing walls are used by Utah State University and other organizations to help climbers overcome fears and build self-confidence and teamwork. All that philosophical philo-sophical stuff was pretty well lost on Jared Labrum of Troop 890, however. As he put it, "I just thought it was fun!" Most of the materials used to build the tower were donated or provided at reduced cost by local companies and through military sur-ilus. sur-ilus.
