Operation. He is married to Bonnie Bastian and they have four boys ages 14. 13, 10, 2. His wife, Bonnie, was born and raised in Salina. Utah, and came to the Uintah Basin to attend nursing school where she met Shayne and decided to stay. She is employed at Uintah Basin Medical Center in Roosevelt as a RN surgical surgi-cal nurse. Shayne, his wife, children and long-time employee Chris Walker along with seasonal help have turned the Pelican Lake Farm operation oper-ation into a profitable and well-organized well-organized farm and cattle operation. In addition to the farming operation, opera-tion, Shavne has served on a num ber of Kurds and committees: Ouray Park Irrigation Company. Associated Water Users. Uintah River Commissioner Committee and other Irrigation and Water Project committees. He has made it a top priority to improve and practice any and all conservation and utilization advantages advan-tages that he possible can. Some of these include earlier application of warm water from Pelican Lake on his small grains and alfalfa fields, as well as pastures pas-tures to stimulate early growth and less evaporation, resulting in less water use and higher vields. With early crops, comes earlier harvest of small grain, often hv mid July This leaves enough growing season to double back with additional cnps of turnips for fall and winter grain and or sorghum or fall small grains for cattle foraging. Another advantage advan-tage is the ability to harvest four mature cuttings of alfalfa resulting in higher yield per year. Also, early grain corn crops will result in lower harvest cost. By matching these conditions with precisely the best seed varieties and fertilizer programs, has been a big part of maximum profitability. McKee maintains that even the best of yields and operations management man-agement is not enough. You must market your crops and products to the very best you can. To achieve this you must insure that you have a clean and healthy product to market. This will attract more and better buyers, resulting in higher sale prices, he said. He has always maintained that the one area that most farmers overlook is the area of organized management. Records have shown that a rigorous preventive maintenance mainte-nance program is the key to cost control. He maintains that with this key element a farmer will immediately immedi-ately find labor cost and repaid cost along with efficiency of labor and equipment, the overhead cost will be greatly reduced. He Ls a strong believer that any good farmer has to respect the land from w hich he takes. "When we give this award we look for someone who is innovative." innova-tive." said Errol Merkley. chairman of the Soil Conservation Board.
