Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 12 May The Liberty Church Saved My Life! By Wendy Rasmussen Myers The Liberty Church saved my life! The school bus stop was a mile from my home. In the winter of 1971, the road from the Liberty Church down toward the river and over to my house usually got plowed only when my father was home to plow it. Being a fireman, this could only happen on the days he was home. So, there were times when I would have to walk through snow up to 2 feet deep to get to the bus stop that was next to the church. Of course, in 1971, girls were not allowed to wear pants to school, and sharing a locker at the old Weber High School didn’t allow much room to store books, snow boots, and a change of clothes for two people. So, off to the bus stop we would go each morning with our short skirts and bare legs, which would go beet red from the cold. Normally, on cold mornings at the bus stop, we would huddle around the entrance to the Liberty Church waiting for the bus. I had spent more than a few mornings like this, and repeatedly checked the doors to the church hoping they were unlocked so we could get in and warm ourselves. They were always locked. One particular morning the snow was deep, the roads weren’t plowed, and the north wind was blowing drifts everywhere. I can’t begin to describe how really cold it was. The bus was late—very late. I remember thinking, if start to walk home, I’m going to die! Now, I’m not a complainer and can stand many adverse conditions, but I really believed I would freeze to death before I made it the mile distance back to my house. Knowing that the church door was always locked, I never thought to give it a try. However, after waiting and freezing for about an hour, I said a silent prayer, “Please Heavenly Father, let the door be unlocked.” I tried the door and, to my surprise and relief, it opened. This was the first and last time I ever found that door unlocked. I’ve since moved from Liberty, and have taught — School to the youth in Hooper rt 23 . On occasion, I have related this story to i alee As they and their families have driven to Liberty, some have pointed out the church house to their parents saying, “That’s the church that saved Wendy’s life.” cont. on page 12 special Volunteers Needed!
