First it forms a small rosette with wrinkled leaves, then the second year it has a straight stem up to 6 feet tall, with lines of downward-facing thorns or spines. Leaves are lance-shaped, spiny underneath, and have conspicuous veins. Flower heads are oval-shaped and contain small purple flowers protected by curved spines. Common in marshy areas next to water, along irrigation ditches, and moist pastures. Blooms in late summer, but the stems and seedheads are often visible os round. Ogden Valley Pathways and all hardworking maintenance volunteers Weber Pathways Invites Community to Celebrate National Trails Day Weber Pathways is hosting its eighth annual National Trails Day on Saturday, June 3, at the southwest corner of the Rainbow Gardens parking lot in Ogden. This year we’re co-hosting a celebration of the new Birdsong Trail with Ogden Trails Network, Ogden City, and the Weber-Morgan Health Department. The Birdsong Trail, linking Fillmore Avenue with the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, has a bird-friendly pond nestled in trees, several small bridges over running water, and inviting views of Ogden City and Ogden Canyon. The land on which the southern portion of the trail was built was sold at a considerable discount to Ogden by the Stuart and Duncan Families who have a rich ancestry on the land dating back to the early 1900’s. The north side of the trail is on an easement graciously granted to Ogden by the King Family. The National Trails Day event is free and open to all. Activities start at 7:30 a.m. with a bird walk with Audubon Society and a 10K Volks Walk. A Gold Medal Mile walk starts at 8:30 a.m., and at 9:30 a.m. the trail-opening ceremony begins. Prizes will awarded to the 4th and Sth grade students from Taylor and Horace Mann Elementary Schools for the best National Trails Day/Birdsong posters. All participants will be entered into a raffle, and children under 12 will receive free same-day passes to the George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park. Thank you to the King Family for inviting us to celebrate at Rainbow Gardens and for supplying the refreshments.
