Show Sporting Life. That rough line of bogus horse r&cing at Agricultural Agri-cultural park has fortunately come to an end, and Mr. Montgomery's retirement from local sporting life Is greeted with extreme joy by the public. The graft lasted long enough to make the public think that cinch brace game is a right mild form of amusement compared with the grafting of unscrupulous un-scrupulous bookies. fcy tV V The recent unhoaval in the Salt JLake team, coming at a time when the aggregation was just beginning to settle down to first class baseball form, was a source of m,uch grief to the local fans. It begins to look as if Salt Lake never would get anything satisfactory in the way of outdoor sports, notwithstanding the fact that the city ia one of the most remunerative centers for legitimate sport in the West. It is difficult to state just where the blame lies, but the action of the imported management man-agement who recently took charge of the local team has not inspired the locals .with any very big cartloads of enthusiasm. The attempt at a general reduction of salaries seems to have been uncalled for as the game was extremely well patronized pat-ronized when the divorce came. It is unfortunate, unfortu-nate, too, that the men retained on an average were weaker men than the strikers, and it looks now as if it would be extremely difficult for Mr. Reynolds at this .part of the season to secure competent men to take the places of the discontented discon-tented tossers. A little more disposition towards amenity on both sides would probably result in the reinstatement of the striking players and a satisfactory adjustment of the affair. "While the breach will by no means be necessarily neces-sarily fatal Jo baseball .in Salt Lake, the .affair has been a great disappointment to local fans wno have been looking forward for years to the secur ing of a fast team in a fast league. J JX Jack Clifford has come to town and is getting into form for his coming contest with Clarence English. Every local sport knows that when Clifford 'goes into the ring there will be a lively and plucky contest, and while English does not come here heralded with a very large reputation I or with a published string of victories, he looks the part of a prize fighter and the mill will probably prob-ably be better than anything that has been seen hertfin the featherweight class for the past several sev-eral months. 5 3? A contest which ought to draw a big crowd Is the coming one between "Chicago" Jack Daly and Jerry McCarthy, who will do battle at the Grand Theatre on August 3rd. Like English, Daly is new to the local sports, but S, J. Kelly, who will manage the bout, states that Daly is an able bruiser and that the public will be given a grueling exhibition when he and McCarthy meet. & & A hysterical young scribe on a local contemporary contem-porary has a thrilling story in which a Brighamu CixVy man is announcedi to have won about $20,000 from some local sports at a recent dice game. The alleged "scoop" loses half its pungency when it is learned that the game did not occur in a stock broker's office on Second South; that only about $1,200 changed hands and that there was no fight, except some of the voicy ones which invariably occur in dice-hurling contests. A cerebum-sooth-Ing and nerve-quieting lotion would be appropriate appropri-ate for the' young man who uncoiled this vivid and erroneous narrAtive. t W Salt Lake for the first time "had the pleasure of witnessing Diavolo in his nerve-exhilirating feat of looping the loop at the Salt Palace on Wednesday Wed-nesday night. The crowd was so large that the inrush could not be accommodated in the big tent. The specialty is certainly' a phenominal one, and everyone in the crowd was breathless with excitement when the Mephistopheles-arrayed acrobat acro-bat came plunging down the incline to assay the wonderful hazard by whirling around the circuit. The performances will continue until next Thursday Thurs-day night. & S - The people who contributed various sums, to be repaid in stock, to the Salt Lake Baseball association, as-sociation, are wondering where they are going to get off in a financial way. Some of them state that they did not receive the stock and those who did are wondering whether it isn't just about as good as a 'residence plot on a high peak of the Adirondacks. A little information on this subject sub-ject from the men who handled the game would be very interesting to the contributors. S S & The effort of Salt Lake men to secure control of the local team lias been ineffectual to date, aa Mr. Reynolds appears to like the city and says he H intends to hold to his tossers. The first ftm 9 away from home was very disastrous and imust M have been a grevious surprise to our old friend H Wiggs. The re-signing of the old players ought H to help matters some, and some good reports M should come from the Zion aggregation during M their wanderings. H |
