Show K e! r I THE TAX LEVY. Bl F The' City Council appears to have effected one ' ., of the few blunderless achievements of the pres- B i? , ent administration in adopting the recommenda- H f I tion of the city auditor by fixing the city tax levy H 1, at 9 mills to the dollar. A contemporary con- H I tended that a levy of 8V2 mills would be sufficient H 1 because of the transfer by the county board of f 1 ! the taxable proceeds of the Bingham County !. miles to Salt Lake City. Formerly this tax on ; j assets amounting to about $800,000 was made at H I ' 1, Bingham instead of .- Salt Lake where the offices B & are located. This was done to make the prop- B $ ji ertv liable for the city and city school tax as H i ii well B : ' i Jt aPPears however, that the mining companies B V will contest this transferrin the courts, and con- B ,i ' r , sequently it was not considered safe to.jeduce the B ' ' j tax levy in anticipation of this1 additional revenue, H !(( ' as it is probable that the litigation will last at B , !' P ' least a year and that being the case this source H y ! of income would not be available to meet this m ' year's expenses. " B f j The levy, therefore, appears a judicious one B ) j as it does hot Vepresentan 'increase, as might H) y have been expected in a growing city, over the Bl I) levy of last year. Many improvements have been Hj I f : made within the past twelve months and the m i city's ' expenses are being augmented. The add- HB 0 i ed expenses have been chiefly incurred in the H, ' many paving extensions, including those on First H -"" and Second South streets running East, and it H K was necessary also to provide for the numerous BH sewer and water main extensions and ottier pub- BH c improvements.
