Show !H " I '1 AN UNREASONABLE CORRESPONDENT. B ), lj Ed. Goodwin's Weekly: H 'I Can you explain what has come over the news- m A j m papers of your city? In former times they were H j i m not always dignified, but they were at least alive. f Eg Both the Herald and Tribune were outspoken J) M and the News could keep up a fight for a month at I IS a stretch. Now the Herald has no antagonisms l'p i H except an occasional long-range fling at the admin- I m istration; the Tribune seems to have no mission f except to exploit T. Kearns and the San Pedro rail- eg road, while the News is content with giving now I nd then a blackguard, back-handed thrust at m J1 ffn some P001" devil of Melhodist preacher. Can you H J ( H explain what the trouble is? The public is in the H J f f H throes of ennui. Yours truly, B I I I A DEJECTED HEADER. M I fj I Ogden, July 29th. H i 8i Our correspondent is unreasonable. He falls H fl consider that the people were weary of tho H III clashings of the public press; some men were dis-H dis-H fj I I v gusted when they saw the truth told about them; H 1 1 If V they sald lfc injured business and hurt the reputa- H I J if Si tion of the state to advertise that sometimes on H 1 1 i principle a fight was needed here, and so took H I ! I steps to bring around a reign of perpetual peace H J 'I The change was made and peace settled upon H i . 1! the city and drew its brooding wings over all the H j if eggs in the nest. Is it not better so? .Are not H j ! ffi people happier? Are not the effects altogether H j If good? Did not Ella Wheeler Wilcox come hero H If a few weeka ago and see, and then going away, H j I p I picture this as abouf the only place blessed by H J gt a perfect civilization? Again, as it is better to H) ! " ; praise than to criticise, is there not plenty to H i M praise here? Is not the Moffat road coming? H j if Is not tne San Pedro and Murray road to be H i 1 it! built? Are not the prospects of the sugar beet H ' m crop excellent? Is not Ogden at last blessed Ty B, I l BJ a sappient mayor? Was not Senator Smoot trl- B J m umphantly elected without a positive order being jBp ' j K given by the Church? Was not a gifted, broad- L 'In I minded and up-to-date editor sent for to make I I j ' j clear to the denizens of the West what real jour nalism ought to be? Have we not some gentlemen gentle-men in high office whose transcendant virtues might never have been known except they Were duly advertised? Is it not right, too, that lest a careless public might forget, those virtues should be advertised every morning? Are not these and kindred facts enough to occupy all the time of the daily journalists? As for the News, has it not told lies enough for Christ's sake? Why should it not rest? Is not its editor a devout man? Why should he not have peace? Is it not enough for him daily at family prayers to remind the Lord that we (the Lord and the editor) finally fixed the Infernal Gentiles in such a way that now if any deviltry is done in the Lord's cause the opposition newspapers news-papers have contracted lto be volceles? What does our correspondent expect? Would he break up the present serenity? Again, speaking of the Influence of the press, did he not notice how the Tribune expressed a suspicion that a certain woman wo-man had killed a man near Murray, and that as a result the murderess, away off in Grand Rapids, Michigan, who had never seen the paper, walked into the police station and confessed the crime? Does not our correspondent know that a senator sen-ator and congressman are to be elected next year, and that it is better not to be asking impertinent imper-tinent questions and advertising sinister suspi-. suspi-. dons? Does he not know that a school trustee is soon to be elected and that either a Saint must be elected or a Gentile like two on the present board who will always vote as the Saints may direct? Has our correspondent never noted the Lord's hand in 'giving wisdom to Ihe solid eight in our City Council? WouM he have the present felicity disturbed by carping newspapers? Is not everything every-thing all right, and is not Justice Baskln of the Supreme Bench ready to get out of bed at any hour of the night to -admjt it? ( |
