"Ragtime" entertwines the stories of a wealthy white family, fam-ily, a poor Jewish immigrant . and his motherless daughter and a black Harlem musician and revolutionary named Co-alhouse Co-alhouse Walker to poignantly illustrate wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair and love and hate that was a way of life for those in the melting pot of humanity of the early 1900s. Peppered throughout are historical his-torical figures of the era, such as Henry Ford, Admiral Perry, Houdini and Booker T. Washington. Wash-ington. The production earned the 1998 Tony Award for best book and best score and Drama Desk Awards for best musical and best book. It is based on "Ragtime," "Rag-time," the E.L. Doctorow novel. Lyrics and music are by Lynn Aherns and Stephen Flaherty, the award-winning composers of "Seussical" and "Once On This Island." While the piece is clearly imbedded in its time in history, the story which is set in New Rochelle, New York contains con-tains universal themes such as the value of having a dream and dealing with prejudice, immigration issues and social agendas. In addition to directing, David Da-vid Whitlock has designed the set which includes a Model T Ford. Assisting him are music director Kathryn Laycock -Little, Kellie Messerly as choreographer, choreog-rapher, Melanie Hess as stage manager and Susan Whitenight as costume designer.
