We had on the deck in stanchions 50-gallon drums of denatured alcohol, which we used to dean the firing locks on the five-inch guns. When we hit the storm, the ship would drop into a swell, then hit a wave on the next side bang! The ship would shudder and shake. Then pretty soon it would come up again, and bang! it would hit the other side. The screws would come up out of the water wa-ter and turn like crazy. Then the ship would climb up the other side of a wave. One of those drums got loose. Along one wall, we had spigots with a trough underneath, under-neath, with all the different grades of hydraulic oil for the recoil systems on the different guns. That drum went down the wall and sheared off every one of those spigots, and there was oil an inch thick on the deck. You can imagine the mess, oil running back and forth. We had on board big bales of rags, stored in the aft deck. We brought them up and used the rags to soak up all the oil. You'd be down on your hands and knees, wiping the oil off the metal deck. The ship would list, and you'd go sliding. The fumes became so strong, everybody became nauseated. The night we captured the Externsteine, we went ashore about four in the morning, and Crystal Eagle NORTH COUNTY STAFF The Department of Prospective Prospec-tive Student Services at UVSC has awarded the Utah Valley State College Outstanding Citizenship Citi-zenship Crystal Eagle Scholarship Scholar-ship Award to 18 high school students. We didn't get all the German stuff back on our ship till about the same time the next morning. My pants were froze. My fingers and hands were so numb that I couldn't manipulate them. I finally got into a hot shower, and that was a big mistake. My feet and hands began to hurt terribly as I thawed them out. I've had trouble ever since trying to keep my feet warm. We supplied a big airbase on southern Greenland, Bluie West One. The bombers that were ferried out of Newfoundland Newfound-land would land on this base, pick up fuel, and fly on over to Ireland and Scotland. The airfield was 40 miles up a glacier, so we'd rendezvous with an aviation fuel tanker, or two or three supply ships, and bring them through the ice into the harbor, where they'd be unloaded. Then we'd come back in, break the ice up. and take them back into open sea. We lost a kid in one of the bays, where we iced up. The ship was rolling, because she was top heavy, there was so much ice on her. Everybody Every-body turned out with big rawhide raw-hide mallets to break the ice off everything. The railings on the ship were one solid wall of ice, no longer three rails. A sailor on the gun deck broke off a big chunk of ice, and it fell on a seaman down on the main deck. The kid was flipped right over into the water, and we never saw him again. Three minutes in that water, and you're dead anyway, from award recipients named others through their service." To earn this award, not only did these students have to maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative cu-mulative grade point average, but they were also judged on character leadership traits, desire to learn, ability to share expertise, sensitivity and respect re-spect for peers. Recipients receive a half -tuition scholarship to UVSC and a lead crystal-carved eagle mounted with a plaque and 785-6319 mABCO Glass Products SOUTH GENEVA ROAD, LIN DON M mm m Wmm tai ... K I ' , 3 i a ,vz hypothermia. Even if you're rescued in two minutes, you've suffered some nerve damage. When the ship broke ice, it was a terrible noise a racket rack-et you can't believe. When you first start to break through, the ice goes up past the ship's bow and scratches the paint right off. Then the weight of the ship brings the bow back down. When the ice gets heavy, the skipper backs up the ship, then runs at the ice again back up, break down. If the ice is thinner, the bow just breaks through. We also had the job of charting ice iceberg floes down to the shipping lanes. One day, all of a sudden the ship stopped A great big iceberg, ice-berg, maybe three or four stories high, was rocking back and forth. The bottom part had got spongy, and the iceberg ice-berg was becoming top heavy. Finally it turned over, and when the bottom came up, it was a pretty emerald green. As the water drained from it, it changed colors, finally becoming be-coming crystal clear, and then frosty, after the cold got to it. I Next week: Arctic Eskimos and animals and a precious metal.
