Soccer The Lone Peak girls soccer team was the first of four area squads that made it to the title game in their respective sports but were unable to get the final victory. Orem took first place in Region Re-gion 7, but neither the Tigers, Provo nor Lehi could make it past the quarterfinal round in the 4A tournament. Volleyball Anyone who was surprised to see Lone Peak in the 5A state championship game hasn't been watching prep volleyball for very long. The Knights advanced to the final match for the fifth straight year, but this time Brighton was too strong and Lone Peak FILENorth County Callie Craig of Orem hits the ball during the state tennis tournament at Liberty Park on Oct. 10, 2006. Craig was a key part of the Tigers' 4A state championship in girls' tennis. Region 7 turned into an exciting pairing of Lehi and Provo, two deep and powerful teams. Although they failed to reach the final, the duo met in a battle for third in the 4A state tournament with Lehi emerging victorious. Softball Both Springville and Spanish Fork used balanced pitching and team-wide hitting to win games throughout the season, winning Region 7 and Region 4, respectively, with undefeat- ed records. Cross Country For the second straight year, Utah Valley girls cross country coun-try teams couldn't quite get that coveted first -place finish, though once again they were close. Timpview came the closest, clos-est, picking up the runner-up spot only four points behind champion Mountain Crest. Orem, Provo and Payson came in fourth, fifth and tin- fjj Jji- 3 'Oir I v y : i ....w . W w sixth, respectively, displaying display-ing the overall versatility of the region. In Class 5A, Timpanogos and Spanish Fork tied for third place. Individually, Orem's Krys-tal Krys-tal Harper won the 4A race with Payson's Melissa Baird in fourth and Timpview's Stephanie Stepha-nie Jensen and Samantha Peav-ler Peav-ler taking fifth and sixth. Lone Peak's Kacee Hildebrant was third in the 5A race with Spanish Span-ish Fork's Kirsten Sly coming in sixth. Swimming The Timpview girls swim team fought an epic battle with East for the top spot in 4A for the second straight season, but this time came out on the short end. The Leopards pulled away with some strong individual and team performances, but the Thunderbirds still picked up second. In the 5A state meet, both Lone Peak and American Fork had strong showings, coming in fourth and fifth, respectively, respective-ly, overall. tmtaim "sumivimp msm 880 North State Street Orem, Utah I NEWS AND 1 NOTES Baseball MOUNTAIN VIEW BASEBALL - Former Bruin Mitch Jonea has been on a tear this season sea-son for the AAA Las Vegas 51 sin the Dodgers ' organization. Jones currently leads the Pacific Coast League in slugging (.697), RBI (60), home runs (19), and total bases (129). TIMPANOGOS BASEBALL - 2005 Timpanogos grad Alax Lyons was named to the second-team All-Central Valley Conference team following his sophomore season at Taft College in California. Lyons hit .304 and led the conference in stolen bases with 31. Lyons will be taking his game to the Bay Area next year where he has committed to play for the University of San Francisco. Softball OREM SOFTBALL - Tiger senior Delyse Downey was honored for her efforts this season sea-son by being invited to participate on the 5A team in the 4A5A all-star game Wednesday at the Cottonwood Complex. Downey was also placed on the Academic All-State team. TIMPANOGOS SOFTBALL - The school hired Niki Anderson away from American Fork to take over as the new softball coach, replacing Frank Bramall, who stepped down to take over as the school's Athletic Director. Anderson is a three-time state MVP, who pitched Alta to three state championships. She is a four-time All-State All-State First Team selection and owns virtually every high school state pitching record in Utah including a 0.12 ERA and 767 career strikeouts. Andersen will also help coach basketball and volleyball.
