In tribute to those dedicated men and women, I urge everyone in Tactical Air Command to set an extra symbolic place at each Thanksgiving table and to encourage their civilian friends and neighbors to do the same as a reminder that duty has called so many of our comrades away from home. In the three months since Operation Desert Shield began, Americans have gone to extraordinary lengths to show their support for the men and women taking part. A grateful nation appreciates the sacrifices these dedicated military professionals are making to defend our interests and maintain stability in the volatile Middle East. A symbolic empty place at the Thanksgiving table would be a poignant reminder that freedom and the American way of life have a price, and that Americans from every part of the nation's society are paying that price in Operation Desert Shield. For those with loved ones deployed, it will indeed be a lonely Thanksgiving and the empty place will have much more than symbolic meaning. We all hope and pray for a solution to this crisis that will reunite our families as soon as possible. Gen. Robert D. Russ Commander, Tactical Air Command blessing. Jesus once healed 10 lepers who had called to U Him for mercy. Only one returned to. give thanks. Jesus asked, "Were there not 10 cleansed? But, where are the nine?" . 1 1 It is only natural to expect gratitude from those who are given much. A man once prayed-thiprayer, "Thou that hast given so much to me, give me one thing more, a grateful heart." Isn't there someone to whom you owe a ver- bal expression of gratitude? But gratitude involves more than speech. In a play written by Shakespeare,. King Lear had two daughters who feigned appreciation for their father until they received their inheritance. Then their lives demonstrated what King Lear called "monster ingratitude." He stated, "How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless child." Is it possible that God feels such hurt when his children and creatures are ungrateful? King Lear also learned that a third daughter, who voiced no gratitude, proved it by her actions and deeds. There need not, however, be a contradiction between word and deed. Gratitude is a spiritual quality in which we should be consistent in every phase of life. This Thanksgiving provides an excellent opportunity to word vocal thanks to others and to acknowledge God in special worship of gratitude and praise. Seneca said, "He that urges gratitude pleads the cause both of God and men, for without it we can neither be sociable nor religious." Maj. Richard C. Besteder s year special ourselves with family and friends to on our many blessings that we have been given. This is truly an American holiday rooted in our earliest history. And it has always had a special meaning for service members everywhere who keep our country strong. Unfortunately, this Thanksgiving, when Americans gather in their homes to give thanks, thousands of our fellow American soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen will not be with us. They will be guarding our country and the freedoms we hold dear in the defense of American interests in Southwest Asia. Our thoughts and . prayers are with them and their families.
