Show CITY PAT flERS they pass the fire limits bill AND THE BILL REGULATE G PEDDLERS the council not to grant liquor licenses in certain casas the city council met in special session last night with mayor dusenbery Dusen bern in the chair alderman amos D holdaway was absent the first business transacted was the hearing of grievances on assessment ol 01 water taxes for the year 1889 george baum and henry stagg appeared and made statements pertaining to assessments of water taxes against them for that year mr blaik appeared in behalf of the william douglass estate asking the remittance of the tax assessed on account of the indigent circum of the family aderman alexander arose in behall of george Q coray who owns two lots As these two lots were not abalen ent of water tax was prayed fur councilor maihen presented pres a petition for a remittance of water tax from mr i eliza haws also one from thomas jarman seaton milner said he did not derive any benefit from the water furnished by the city and he would like the tax assessed against libin remitted olaf Ue denberg was assess for twenty five acres blut cheref were five acres aiom which he derived no benefit he would like tho tax on this amount remitted limes E snow had disposed five acres of his land to mr gatherum to whom it should be assessed he wanted a remittance mit tance of this amount on this account the mayor then read a list of named furnished by the of persons who asked remittances of batir for sundry reasons alderman brown petitioned in behalf of mrs sarah dark who was unable to pay the assessment and wished it abated on motion of mr maiben the further consideration of these applications was postponed to a future meeting the petition of W D roberts et al containing the signatures of over citizens and taxpayers school teachers and scholars was then presented mr W D roberts who was present stated that the petition was only inaugurated on saturday and that in consequence it was incomplete the first and fourth wards no shaving yet completed their canvass the mayor alien read the petition which is as follows to the honorable mayor and city council we your petitioners petition ers citizens and tas of provo city respectfully represent that the close proximity of the various saloons cf this city to public schools and places of public worship tenda seriously to weaken the moral influence of said schools and places of worship and therefore humbly pray that your honorable body will hereafter grant no licenses to any person to open or maintain a saloon nearer than thirty 30 rods from any such school or place of public worship SIGNED clr farrer asked at what age children were allowed to sign their names mr W D roberts stated fall those old enough to write their names mr farrer questioned whether these children knew what they were doing when they signed this petition he doubted very much whether ids ten earold ear old boy did he did not think children were cent to schools for this purpose his children were not and he would have stopped his boy from signing the petition had he found out the fact in time alderman alexander moved as the petition was not completed to postpone aurther consideration of the petition until next meeting councilor farrer moved to amend mr alexanders motion by referring it to the committee of the whole alderman brown offered as an amendment that it be referred to the committee on judiciary judi cary with the city attorney associated voting was then proceeded is follows for mr alexanders motion alexander maiben hausen david holdaway and dixon for mr farmers Farr ers motion farrer daniels and for mr browns motion brown scott and bean mr maiben here arose and stated that he would change his vote for the reference of the petition to the committee on judiciary another vote was then taken resulting as follows on postponement alexander hansen dixon and david holdaway 4 for reference to committee on judiciary farrer daniels bean maiben scott brown and 7 The petition then went to the committee on judiciary and the city attorney on motion of alderman alexander the council proceeded to the consideration of the bill establishing fire limits nothing material was changed in the bill and the substance of it remains as published last tuesday the council next proceeded to the consideration of the bill to regulate fruit peddlers leis and drivers of public conveyances vey ances upon the consideration of this bill the council found that alie city charter gave that body no power to restrict hacklen from entering railroad cars for the purpose of soliciting patronage and that portion of the bill was amended the title was then amended to read A bill to regulate drivers of public con after which the bill passed alderman scott casting the only negative vote councilor farrer thought it would be a good idea for all carlies interested in alie waters of provo river to meet at some early day with the council committee on irrigation organize into en association make regulations looking to a bet ter feeling than has existed in the past and appoint a katr commissioner the matter was left n the hands of the committee on irrigation with authority to attend to the subject on motion of councilor council adjourned till tuesday evening february at 7 |
