Jo Porter awarded Outstanding Teacher by Kjirstin Youngbcrg Jo Leigh Porter has been selected as one of Utah's most outstanding teachers and will be spotlighted on KSL Radio's "Teacher Feature." Porter teaches math, art and photography at Summit High, a school for at-risk students. Most of these students are from foster or group homes, and have not done well in traditional schools. Porter has a way of reaching them, and helping them find success. For several years Porter has found old, discarded plastic "Wonder Horses" and taught the students to turn them into magnificent, magnif-icent, gilded works of art. Students Stu-dents learn, sometimes for the very first time, the satisfaction of giving, as the now decorative "carousel" horses are donated to the Primary Children' Hospital, where they arc sold at the annual Festival of Trees. In 1998, two horses, one large and ,one small, brought $1,400 at auction to benefit the medical center, as well as the lives of the students who helped make it possible. Summit High has no funds for improvements, but Porter spent two years scourging for bargains to equip an old shower room as a darkroom for photography class. Early treatment with prescription prescrip-tion medicationsnot over-the-counter products-offers a good chance of zapping the annoying and painful symptoms of these small, shallow lesions that crop up on the tongue, lips, cheeks, soft palate or the floor of the mouth, says Deborah Greenspan, DSC, BDS, a professor of clinical clini-cal oral medicine in UCSF's Department Stomatology. Canker soresofficially known as aphthous ulcers-aren't contagious because they don't appear to be triggered by viruses or bacteria. Untreated canker sores pose no danger or long-term health risk. brain activities in regular schools, but flourish when given a chance to use their creative side. Porter travels to cheer for her students who play in recreational sports teams, and as most guardians guard-ians have difficulty making it to quarterly meetings to check their students progress. Porter visits their homes. She has found ways to make the subject of math interesting to students, and even found a willing senior to help out. Porter always offers a smile of friendship, and is an asset to the community. Office Max will provide Porter $200 of supplies of her choice, and she and her husband will have an overnight stay at the Homestead Resort in , Midway. She will also be honored at a banquet in May to honor the teachers for the 1999-2000 school year. Jo Leigh Porter is married to Khcm Porter, and they are the parents of three boys. They live in Mapleton. f T n - --I 4i Last week Sage Creek Elementary sponsored the Deseret News Spelling Bee. Over 70 students participated.
