Opportunities at Springville High by Leah Hatch Last month we wrote about the Internship program at Springville Spring-ville High School and how it is helping so many students. We spotlighted one of the many students and the success that is going on here at SHS with this program. We our appreciation for the businesses and the support that they extend to the students. Each month we are going to highlight one of the many sites that help in. assisting with these interns. It is a great way to help the students decide on a career and help them further their education. edu-cation. Starting in February at SHS, we will start having Lunch Forums Fo-rums twice' a month. There will be a sign-up sheet at the high school for students to decide if they want to attend. The first speaker, coming on February 4 will be Mary Reeder. She will be talking to the students about art and what it has to offer for those who are interested. She is very experienced in this area and has her own business where her students learn and even master their talents. There will also be a question and answer time at the end of the meeting. On February 16, we will have a speaker coming to speak on the construction trades. Hopefully through the coming months we can touch on many career areas and get students excited for their future. Space will be limited, so we encourage those that want to be involved to sign up soon. Also, there will be a great boxed lunch served where the student can pick and choose items that they would like at the time they sign up. Cost will be around $2.50 for a nice lunch. We feel with the support of the community, that this Internship Intern-ship program will better prepare our students for their futures. If anyone from the community has some special trades that they would like to share, please don't hesitate to call. If anyone has any comments, questions or would like to get involved with this program, please give us a call at Springville Spring-ville High, 489-2870. Please ask for Leah Hatch or Toneta Holmes. Below is an article from one of the great businesses that has helped with this program. Published in the Springville Herald January 19 & 26, 2000. The Spinal Column by Dr. Darren B. Obrey The Reversed Curve One of the major findings, and one of the most significant long term affects of receiving a whiplash is the reversal of the normal curve of the neck. The curve of the neck is important because biomechani-cally biomechani-cally a normal curve will allow the joints and muscles to move through their full range of motion. mo-tion. Loss of this curve means the loss of normal biomechanics. This creates instability and stress to all the structures of the neck. Over time, if not treated properly, the body will begin to adapt to these changes by building build-ing bone in the front of the spine (osteophytes), increasing muscle mass to the neck to help stabilize the loss of normal posture, and hardening of the tendons, ligaments, liga-ments, cartilage and other soft tissue which may be under a constant stretch. This will all lead to a loss of proper motion. Without the proper motion, the joints of the spine will begin degenerative process that may be several times greater than normal. nor-mal. Also, a loss of the neck curve will eventually lead to a pleasure of serving the Springville Spring-ville community for over 18 years. Founded by Brian B. Lambert, adding partner William G. Sumsion 11 years ago, PSTS has had many great experiences dealing with Springville High School. They have provided athletic training services for the athletic programs, participated in career day and other support to the school. During the last three years, they have had the opportunity to have high school interns via the Career Training Program offered at the school. The experience has been beneficial to the clinic as well as the students. The quality of students they have had at the clinic has been super, and they have been able to observe and assist patients in their rehabilitation rehabilita-tion programs. While they don't know if any students have or will go on to become physical therapists it has been a pleasure to have them in ; (he clinic. We at PSTS believe in supporting the educational as well as athletic programs in our local community. Thanks for the opportunity. change in the curve of the mid-back mid-back and even the lowback and hips. This will affect the way you walk, and all other motions you go through whether you feel it or not. Long term symptoms are a virtual rollercoaster of neckpain, headaches, dizzyness, nausea, vision and hearing, problems with swallowing, midback pain, lowback pain, shoulder pain, numbness and ' tingling in the extremities and any other problems prob-lems that can be associated with loss of posture. The serious nature of this problem can not be overstated. Those who have gone through a whiplash, whether mild or severe, se-vere, know exactly what I'm talking about. It is a life changing injury for many! Next week, I'll give some insights on what can be done to correct or help minimize the affects of this injury.
