Show Page Two - The Springville Herald - January 26, 2000 EDITORIAL , Last week in the Springville Herald. Springville Police Officer j Corporal R. Anderson talked about his duties as the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) officer. He explained how he ; Joves this job and how attached he has become to the fifth graders jn our community that he teaches. ; His article was heartfelt. You could tell that he loves teaching the kids, and he feels that the D.A.R.E. program is effective. ; Officer Anderson needs the help of citizens. The D.A.R.E. program is funded entirely by donations. Donations provide the workbooks, some stickers and others items to reward the students plus T-shirts for them to wear reminding them of their pledge to stay away from drugs. But local donations are about to run out, and Officer Anderson '. is asking citizens to help keep the program going. He would like to purchase T-shirts for the 350 or so fifth grade students who will graduate from the D.A.R.E. program soon. He needs your help, and every little bit will help he said. The D.A.R.E. program started in 1983 and brings specially-trained, specially-trained, uniformed police officers into the classroom to teach extensive self-management and resistance skills. The cirriculum teaches the children not only to say "no," but how to resist negative peer pressure to try drugs and alcohol and to join gangs. : Since that time, millions and millions of children nationwide and ; abroad have graduated from the program. Does D.A.R.E. help our kids? We think it does. The program might not keep all kids from trying drugs, but it certainly helps in - that war. All of those who graduate from D.A.R.E. have to write an essay on what they have learned. We found some of those essays in our file. They were written several years ago by kids here in ' Springville. One says," D.A.R.E. has taught me that drugs aren't the answer. I feel that drugs are not good. I have seen what happens i when you take drugs... you get upset and everybody hates you when you act like that. I've had bad feelings about drugs cuz my mom " uses them sometimes... she said she would stop." '. Another one said, "In our D.A.R.E. books, we have quizzes and work-sheets that help us learn about drugs and alternatives in .' time of stress. Taking a risk is taking a chance. Of course taking I drugs is risky even though most people know what drugs have done '. to others... still people are stupid enough to think they are cool. I Some of the main reasons people use drugs is they think they will ; become popular in school, they want to make a change in their life ; and they want people to think they are cool. I know I won't ever try ; drugs. ..I'm happy with the way I am. Thanks again for helping us ; realize the consequences of taking drugs." ; And another: "D.A.R.E. to be drug free. If you want to be ; cool, live by this rule. When you are feeling bad, talk to your dad. ; Because gcting hugs is better than drugs." ; You can make donations to D.A.R.E. at the Springville Police ; : Department. These were a finalization of a date and a consideration con-sideration of an amendment. The Envision Utah Partnership Partner-ship wants to make a presentation of its' plan to Mapleton. Envision Envi-sion Utah is a proposal of what they feel is the best way to plan growth in Utah. Concerns, such as air quality, water demand, de-mand, transportation and housing are a few of the examples of concerns that were taken into account. The council also has information infor-mation sent to them by a private organization that offers another point of view. They will see the The fairytale is that our city government is open to public scrutiny and shows interest in the opinion of citizens. The sour aftertaste is that for 15 years 11 million dollars of our tax money will benefit only special interests. At that meeting I asked three questions of the pro-RDA forces, but only one was answered. 1. Why does this RDA give away 100 of taxpayers' money to special interests when other Utah County RDAs give away 55-70. Mr. Oswald the RDA lawyer privately and honestly told me that the 100 giveaway occurred because the current law allowed it. 2. Why would the City Council Coun-cil favor development with an COMMENT Fan Club Editor: My name is Lee Anderson and I am the President of The Fan Club. The Fan Club has taken a lot of big hits this year, and I'm not writing this article to vent my frustrations. I believe what every body is expecting me to write in this article, about how The Fan Club is getting dumped on and how Springville High is so bad but, if I wrote that it ; would be a lie. I can't say that I have enjoyed every moment of this year but the good definitely exceeds the bad. Springville Senior High School is the greatest school. There is no doubt in my mind about it. I am born true blue, through and through. Whether it be die outstanding out-standing faculty to the student body that amazes me every day I attend there. People then might ask me, "Well then Mr. True Blue how do you explain all the fighting." Allow me for one moment to expand your horizons, maybe shed a little light on to your dark world. The Pay son game, what's done is done and I personally take responsibility for what happened hap-pened there even though I didn't throw any punches. But did you know that the very next game Payson got into a brawl with Provo. And that same week the Spanish Fork mob sent two people peo-ple to the hospital, one from the opposing school and one of their own people. Safe and courteous driving for new year Start the millennium off right: make a commitment to drive safer beginning right now. Over the past five years, automobile i fatalities, in Utah, claimed the lives of 10 people during the Christmas Holiday and 13 people 'over the New Year Holiday. ( Literally thousands of Uthans will be on the roads to visit .friends and relatives. The Utah "Safety Council reminds you to drive defensively and follow hese safety tips: - Allow plenty of following distance and reduce speed if road and weather conditions are poor. It is better to arrive late than not "at all. r Thefts included a dayplanner taken from a work place; rear license plate; several gas skips; gbd a bike.. The juveniles who took the bike were found and charged with theft, trespassing and possession of drug parapher-'nalia. Envision presentation from Envision Utah on March 7 and then make a decision whether to join or not into the partnership. The amendment considered was regarding the annual leave of city employees. The council had decided in the past to allow employees em-ployees no later than Dec. 31, 1999 to take their vacation time. Because the city administration was concerned that there might be problems with Y2K, employees employ-ees were asked to not take time the week before and the week after the new year. Since that was RDA instead of non-RDA development devel-opment by a corporation such as Wal-Mart? There is no rational answer to this question. 3. Why should the taxpayers wait for 15 years for full revenue with RDA development, when we would immediately get full revenue reve-nue with non-RDA development? This question also has no rational answer. Springville taxpayers have lost the first battle in the war to prevent donation of our taxes to special interests. We must remain very vigilant and attend city government meetings. We citizens citi-zens need to carefully watch our Council in order to bring plans for giveaways to special interests into the open where they would not about Provo and Orem, two schools from entirely different regions, one 4A, one 5A, met at Rock Canyon to mob any Springville faithful that arrived. Did anybody from Springville go there to fight? NO! And just for the record re-cord the fights have happened three-fourths of the people there ARE NOT in The Fan Club. After the Provo game the administration called me into their office and told me "no more fighting". I relayed this message to my guys and has there been any more fights? NO! And when I say my guys, I mean my family. fami-ly. Because that is what The Fan Club is, my family. Let me give you a brief history histo-ry of The Fan Club because I'm guessing most of you reading this don't know what it is all about. It has been around for as long as I can remember. Last year we would come to the games in our war paint and CHANT every obscenity in the book. This year we don't allow it. When non-members non-members leak down in the members mem-bers section and try to start obscene ob-scene chants I have observed members top them dead in their tracks. I have been amazed at some of the words that usually come out of their mouth, and they probably have conjured up new four letter words in their spare time. Yet these same members mem-bers arestopping vulgar chants? That is something to think about. Clear windows of ice, snow and steam before you begin your trip. You need to see clearly when you are driving-clearing just a peep hole is not enough. Fasten your safety belts and make sure that children and passengers are properly restrained. re-strained. Children 12 and under, should always ride in the back seat. Be alert for drivers who have had too much to drink. Alcohol-impaired drivers drive at inconsistent speeds, change lanes frequently, disregard traffic signs and drive outside of lane markers. mark-ers. DO NOT let friends drink and drive. You should convince them to stay overnight, ride with someone else, or you should call a taxi for them. Be aware of changing road and weather conditions and drive accordingly. Plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to travel to your destination. asked of the employees the council coun-cil thought it only fair to extend the vaction time limit to the end of January 2000. Another item on the agenda was the discussion of building sites and property acquistion. It was decided by the council to consider this item in closed session, ses-sion, the reason being prices of the buildings and property would be discussed and it would be in the best interest of the city to consider this among the council members until offers on the properties were given. perish like pulled weeds that die in the sunlight and fresh air. A barrage of letters to the Springville Herald would continually contin-ually remind the City Council that we want open city government govern-ment and that giving tax money to special interests is unacceptable. unaccept-able. Incidentally, at the state level the Utah Taxpayers Association Associ-ation will offer bills restricting RDAs, and they deserve our support on this issue, I would be happy to speak to any Springville citizen who wants to encourage transparent city government and to fight against giving tax dollars to special interests. Jim Weber Springville PAGE fighting I have seen some big changes in people this year. These same people have joined The Fan Club and have got involved. These people have actually came to me wanting work, asking me for a job to do. Why? I don't know. Why question a good thing? I have seen the shyest kids that don't say three words during the day' but at night lose their voice, from cheering so loudly. Guys getting dressed up and coming out of their comfort zone to cheer on the team. That is what The Fan Club is about. Not fighting. There are a few people , that need thanking. First of all Springville Sprin-gville High administration. Especially Espe-cially Principal Mike Hicks, he is the best principal Springville has ever had. He has fought to the teeth for our mascot the Might Red Devil, lowered truancy rates tremendously and he has worked with, and supported The Fan Club through this whole dilemma. dilem-ma. Jeff Mills for donating the shirts and his advice and humor. Coach Greg Smith, being -The Fan Club advisor, basketball coach and a great teacher. I mean the guy is all about uplifting people, never any putdowns. And most importantly of all, my guys. I don't want to get emotional or anything but, (sob, sob, tear roll down my face) I Love You man. We have had a poor turn out for the games lately and I'm sorry. I needed a vacation. It became more of a burden than it was fun. But everything is in focus now and I have a new favorite saying. And I will leave you with it. The saying is: "The Phoenix will rise from its own Ashes".
