Show 2 THE GREEN SHEET . Thursday, February 20, 1986 Spoirtto Buc DQ Mars Tourney - Warrior Matmen Finish A Strong Third At State WEST JORDAN. While Brighton and West Jordan were pretty well accepted as the favorites for the 4A wrestling crown, a lot of people pointed to Taylorsville as a force to be reckoned with and the Warriors proved it with a strong third place showing in the tournament concluded Saturday night at West Jordan high. Taylorsville wound up with 103 points, while Brighton totalled up 157 and West Jordan 149. Granger, with some strong individual efforts, was eighth at 79 points. Warrior coach Mike Johnson could hardly contain his pride in the efforts of Todd Humpherys who marched straight through to the 119 and most pound championship valuable wrestler honors in the lower weights Humpherys only close match came in the quarterfinals against Ryan Norton, the defending 4A champion, where Humpherys won 0 in a defensive thriller. Johnson was a little unsettled with the 167 pound final where John Kendrick of West Jordan was given some late near-fal- l points to edge Tim Rogers The coach felt the official had missed some possible near-fal- l points for Rogers. But, overall 1 was very pleased with our kids efforts, Johnson summarized. We took 12 wrestlers and all 12 scored points for us. It was just an excellent team effort. The only cloud over the well-raand highly entertaining tournament appeared early Saturday afternoon n when Cyprus highs superb heavyweight Mark Smith showed up late for the final weigh-inSmith was later disqualified and had to accept a second place medal. s. Then came John Kendricks 2 win over Rogers of Taylorsville at 167. Troy Sargent of Bingham lost a 7 match to finish fourth, while Kevin Worlton of Alta won the fifth spot. If not for his team ending up second, West Jordan coach Tex Castos evening wouldve been complete with his son Ted s win by fall over Kevin Bouwman of Alta at 185. Brian Syddall of Granger was fourth and Dan Martinez of Brighton was sixth. Of course, the most controversal moment came at heavyweight where Smith was disqualified. Smith, one of the best, if not the best wrestler in the tournament, was given a second place medal. The only other Green Sheet wrestler to place at this weight was Justin Jones of Brighton coming in fourth. ac- cepted responsibility for the weigh-imix-ustating that he had given Smith the time of 1 p.m. But tournament director Tom Molen stated, that after much consultation and discussion, Smiths disqualification had to stand. We had kicked out four other wrestlers out for the same thing, Molen added, and had we allowed Smith to wrestle, we wouldve had four protests on our hands instead of n 5-- 8-- 2 one. At it appeared that Smith might be allowed to complete the tournament. High School Activities Assn, executive secretary Marion Tree recommended Smith go ahead and wrestle with any protests to be handled later. Molen stated, however, that after a deeper examination of the issue, shortly before the finals started, disqualification was the only route that we could take. Hennefer, commenting later, was heartbroken. It was my responsibility and thats it, he said. If they wanted to kick someone out, kick me out, but, dont punish the kid. Brightons Mike Spencer opened the evening by winning at 98, defeating Willard of Mountain View Hobbs of West Jordan went on to finish third in that division, while Altas Brian Bridge took the fifth spot.
