People stopped what they were doing, errands were postponed, but not one got close enough to get involved. Howard says that nothing could have happened to the child because everyone was silently watching to see that he was physically safe, even though he was lost and scared. today, Im talking about lost children. Not too long ago when a chlid was lost in some store or mall, the first move on those around was to comfort the child and see that someone, or themselves, called for help. And Come on, Sounds about right, doesnt it? Pretty soon the store manager would have appeared and the child given ice cream, a lollipop or some comforter and then taken to a quiet place until the parent could be found. Or the police called. Sometimes it was fast and sometimes took a bit longer, but the child was never left without said I . . . how times do change. Howard Davidson called me the other day, relating what he saw happen in the Valley Fair Mall. He saw a whole new set of reactions come into play. Mall Well, the child was soon with his mother, all was well and, I suppose we should be grateful for people who cared enough to linger nearby, determined to not let that child get further lost, but also . . . quite obviously . . . ready to leave at a moments notice if the least chance came of being involved. His homecoming will be held in the Lake Ridge Third ward, 3151 S. 7700 West in Magna, at 12:50 p.m. on Feb. 23, Jr' X f-- Its hard to say, Howard told, what would have happened if a neighbor to the child hadnt walked by and recognized him. He also made known to the crowd that the mother had a hearing impairment and as a result was probably frantic and yet absolutely unable to hear her childs calls. The neighbor hurried around into nearby stores and soon found the frightened mother and got the two of them happily back together. And only then, with it quite obvious that the two belonged together, did the people again silently go their own ways. Howard thought how sad it is that we are now afraid to even help a lost and frightened child. Although people stood nearby to see that he was protected, not one word or touch of comfort was extended. Oh, certainly, if the neighbor hadnt arrived on the scene, someone would have called the police but no one wanted to be involved. Not one soul. Dont get me involved, was written, clear as could be, on every face. our first words would have been, find your mother. its all right. Ill help you comforting arms and voice.
