June AN AWARD WINNING NEWSPAPER Monument proposal goes to Clinton Cortez - Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt has presented to President Bill Clinton a proposal to create four new national monuments, including Canyons of the Ancients in Southwest Colorado. The president could act within the next 10 days. In a phone call to Montezuma County Commissioners, Babbitt said his request to the president was consistent with the management philosophy that a local stakeholders group had agreed upon last year. Grazing and carbon dioxide extraction will continue to be among the multiple uses allowed in the monument, Babbitt promised. However mining will apparently be restricted in the proposed proclamation. The proposed monument would be in Montezuma and Dolores counties, adjacent to San Juan County, Utah on the UtahColorado border. Approximately 140,000 acres are anticipated to be included in the monument which is designed to provide Cortez Journal protection for a host ofAnasazi ruins. It is expected that a loan can be secured for the estimated $4 million expansion project, which could be set to begin construction in July. Given our low debt ratio, we should easily be able to finance the buildings. We think it is prudent business practice to retain our reserves, said a hospital spokesman. At a time when most rural hospitals are experiencing difficulties, the Uintah Basin Medical Center is an anomaly. The rural hospital is among very few in Utah which operate in the black, and continues to prosper in the hands of the local communities. According to the hospitals latest available financial report, March was a record breaking month, both financially and statistically. Uintah Basin Medical Center will change its status from a county owned facility to a stand alone, not for profit corporation in July. The Duchesne County Commission will be Uintah Basin Standard the sole owner of the corporation. Moab - Moab Valley Fire Department officials say they are on pins and needles about a string of odd fires that occurred recently over a period ofabout six weeks. Though not willing to say that they suspect the town has a pyromaniac on the loose, Moab fire officials say firefighters are holding their breath and looking into every lead. Alstructural though none of the blazes have resulted in injury the' fact is to due conditions the that probably damage, prevailed then. If they had occurred now, during windy, 100 degree days, things would likely be far worse. There is no doubt that these strange fires are human caused. We are just on our toes to investigate everything, said the fire official.
