Show ELECTRICITY TO KILL PESTS First Experiments Mad In Washington Washing-ton to Destroy Moths and Aphides by Incandescent Lights. 8ome experiments In electrocuting tree pests, said to be the first ever made, were recently conducted In the state of Washington by W. N. Frost and J. C. Lawrence. In a six year-old orchard many second brood moths and green aphides were killed In a few minutes. The apparatus consisted consist-ed of a storage battery and incandes-cent-light globes of six-candle power, netted with fine steel wire, ., coated with copper and tin alternately. The globes were placed in tbe Jrees, at the ends of covered wires, and the moths flying against them completing the electric circuit, were killed, and fell into receptacles beneath the Blolies. Mr. Front estimates that oiie battery to an acre of trees will keep .be moths under control, dlnpenslng with the usual spraying sn: ssvlrg many dollars. He Is preparing to wire bis orchard of ten acres, containing seven Lundred trees, and some neighbors neigh-bors will do the same. Seve.al thousand thou-sand acres of bearing spple trees will be thus equipped by spring If commercial com-mercial elettrlc wire are extended to orchards tbe expense of batteries may be saved by making direct connection wltb tbem. |
