CLAIM SELF-DEFENSE Bootleggers Fire on Prohibition Prohibi-tion Agents, Who Return Their Onslaughts. WOODSTOCK. Va ., April 2 With a company of state militia closely guarding guard-ing the prisoners, the preliminary hearing of four agents of ihe prohibition prohibi-tion commissioner, charged with murder mur-der as the result of the killing of Lawrence D. Hudson and Raymond Shackleford. alleged liquor law violators, viola-tors, was begun here this morning. The prohibition agents, Harry F. Sweei, W C. Hall. W. B. Dunleavy and T II Sullivan were brought here last night from Fredericksburg. They were accompanied by the military company which had been ordered out by the governor. Although a birr crowd met the train on which, the agpnts and soldiers arrived ar-rived and followed them to the jail, I they soon dispersed. Shackleford and Hudson were killed i a week ago on the county road near ; here. The prohibition agents say they 'had been informed the two men had 1 left Baltimore in an automobile with !a quantity of whiskey which they were ) bringing into the state. The officers I were attempting to search the machine When the shooting occurred. They ' had no warrant, it is stated. and Shackleford who was driving declined to permit the search and started his. machine. The officers said Shackleford Shackle-ford began firing at them at close ranee with a revolver and they return-' return-' ed the fire in self defense. Hudson, in a sworn statement just before his death denied either he or Shackleford had fired at all. The slaying has aroused an intense feeling against the l officers throughout this Bection, |
