Show A6 T THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1999 fAROUNDlDAVISl CLIPPER TODAY Layton ophthalmologists endorse the Lasik surgery and a half years with great results. Quality of a persons vision depends on three elements: the curvature of the cornea, the power of the lens and the length of the eye. Lasik surgery reshapes the cornea within, using a laser. Successfully done, this eliminates the need for glasses or contacts. To prepare for surgery, the patient is given eye drops to numb the eye, but no anesthetic. The patient is awake during the procedure. An eyelid holder is used to hold the eye open. Then a thin layer of the cornea is cut and folded back. A computer controlled beam of cool laser light, focused on the retina, precisely reshapes and vaporizes microscopic corneal layers to flatten the curvature of the cornea. The flap is then returned to its original position, where it heals quickly without stitches. The entire procedure takes five to seven minutes. The operation is painless, and there is no scarring. The numbness leaves in about 30 minutes, and the eye may feel a little scratchy, as if the patient had a dirty contact lens. The recovery time is minimal. Most people begin seeing better right BY VERA O. BARKER Clipper Today Correspondent - Dr. Robert Treft LAYTON and his partner, Dr. Lamont Ericson of the Mountain View Eye Center in Layton are believers. Not only have they performed hundreds of successful Lasik (Laser Assisted Intrastromal Keratomileusis) procedures together, they have actually done the surgery on each other. Ericson said it was hard to justify doing surgery on other people if he was not willing to undergo the same procedure himself. Lasik surgery has become the most popular and widely used surgical procedure to correct nearsightedness. farsightedness and astigmatism. The Lasik procedure allows for the quickest visual recovery period, the lowest infection risk and the largest range of correction. Dr. Treft and Dr. Ericson were among the first physicians in Utah to be certified to use FDA approved excimer lasers. They work in connection with ClearVision laser Centers. There are only five lasers in the state. The Mountain View Eye Center doctors have been using the procedure now for two away. The most common complaint is that the eyes feel dry, and the patient may need to moisten them. Stacie Bingham, surgery coordinator for the eye center, had her eyes done in July. She was back to work the next morning. It was great, Stacie said. I could see my clock and the taps in the shower without putting in my contacts. The first step is an eye exam to be certain you are a candidate for Lasik surgery? Ericson said. Then we map the surface of your eye. We do all our own measurements. For those with bifocals, monovision may be the way to go. One eye can be reshaped for near vision (reading) and one for distance. The brain automatically picks up the change. The doctors recommend trying it with contacts first to see if it would work for you. Lasik is considered elective surgery and not covered by most insurance. The procedure costs $2,050 for one eye, which includes a lifetime guarantee and all eye exams for the first year. Our goal said Treft, is to make sure its the right procedure for you and then to achieve as perfect an outcome as we can. NIELSEN Clipper Today Correspondent RIP 3 U .A'ju lt I lil Olmstead said. We felt like we needed to clean it up a little bit. Police became aware of junk cars either while on patrol or by a citizen complaint. A fix-- it ticket can then be issued which gives the vehicle owner 14 days to fix the problem and avoid a citation and fine. Added to the ordinance was a provision that clarified the citys position on unregistered RVs. Now, an RV can be unregistered without a citation as long as it is in a storage facility. After being brought back onto the road, however; it must be registered. Chief Olmstead said he hopes the change in wording will help the police better enforce the junked car ordinance. The ordinance takes effect city? The change of one SUNSET small word in the Sunset City Junked Car Ordinance may make a big difference to the owners of junk cars. to be both Previously, a cai unregistered and in disrepair to be in violation of the ordinance, but now, changing the wording from and to or puts the vehicle in violation for either problem.
