Mullen returnod for n F visit on Friday from her present homo In Alaska, hearing with her a trunkful of trophies and curios of tho land of tho Arctic circle. Mrs. Mullen accompanied her hus-bniul hus-bniul to Alaska a year ago last July, where he went as register of tho land office at Rampart. Last Juno Mr. Mullen wns transferred to tho ofllco or receiver nt Juneau, whero ho is now stationed. "I don't know what I oxpected""to find," sho remarked, "but I confess that It was not my Idea that thero would be much of civilization or refinement re-finement or culture, nnd I had been taught to bellcvo that 50 to 80 below zero was unbearably cold. I went thero prepared to be a martyr and a frontier woman, and ready to rough It, and I como homo thinking It's tho finest country In tho world. "Tho climate at Rampart In tho In-terlor In-terlor Is fnr superior to Juneau on tho coast, where wo aro now. Thero Is no wind at Rampart, and 40 to GO below zero is really not at all uncomfortable, un-comfortable, "At that place, of course, wo could not get all the comforts wo havo on tho coast, and for two months each fall, whllo tho river Is freozlng, and two months In tho spring, whllo tho stream is breaking up, wo had to do without mnll. Rut tho minors aro well educated, refined people, and the. society Is very agreeable. . V. , "Tho prices In the Interior aro ox- r tremely high. A dozen eggs, whon we could get eggs nt all, cost $1.50; flvo pounds of Biignr $1, and butter was soventy-flvo cents a pound. Tho only difference between living nt Juneau and In this country Is tho cllmato, and I believe I prefer that of Juneau." Omaha Bee. |
