Show Itcccnt experiments with two submarine sub-marine boats that have been added to the United States navy are said to have made obsolete the surface torpedo tor-pedo boat, and to have established two facts; llrst, that a submarine boat can maintain Its course while submerged, sub-merged, and second, that on rising to the surface It can deliver a torpedo accurately and without delay against the vital portion of a battleship. The periods of visibility were short, not exceeding thirty-live seconds, and the course maintained was true. The experiments, ex-periments, especially with the Moccasin, Moc-casin, were entirely successful, and arc claimed to put the United States "far In the lead of other nations In the development of submarine warfare," war-fare," as Harper's Weekly puts It. The French are our chief rivals in this, but though theyareconstructlng a licet of forty-four submarine boats--, their luferlorlly to those of this country coun-try in quick maneuvering and brief time of exposure Is marked. The local opposition to Heed Smoot for United States senator has cooled down wonderfully during the last month. It Is generally conceded that Mr. Smoot will be elected on the llrst ballot and many of those outside of the legislature who were opposed to him seem to have made uptheir minds to accept the situation. People who a few months ago expressed themselves them-selves In violent terms against the candidacy of the apostle, now are frequently fre-quently heard to yiy that Mr. Smoot never was a fanatical religionist, that he Is more of a business man and politician poli-tician than an eccleslast and that It was more for his business qualifications qualifica-tions than his piety that he was elevated ele-vated to the apostolic quorum, tho church, fiom Its varied Interests, needing the advice and council of a sound practical business man. The argument Is accepted that he will make a good senator and represent the state creditably. The ministerial association, as-sociation, however, has not modlllad Its attitude, but does not appear to bo making much headway. What the association needs is a smart politician to take up Its cause and work It properly., prop-erly., A good friend of the association associa-tion and a warm sympathizer with It In its tight on Smoot said to Truth a few dajs ago that the ministers were not going about tho thing properly, that of Its cnthe membership only one, Dr. P.iden, had any practical ideas as to working up their cause, that w hllc the others, no doubt, were very good at pointing the way which leads to mansions in the skies, when it came to engineering a proposition like the onc in hand they were only bags of hot air, not very hot either. Theie would bo great doubt as to whether tho movement to unseat Smoot would succeed oven If presented In Its stiongest form, and in the most adiolt way, and said he, with the mln-isteis mln-isteis cngiucciiug It, tho chances are decidedly against It. Their light is made harder from the fact thatltcau-not thatltcau-not be shown that Smoot Is a polygamic polyga-mic himself and it Is generally believed be-lieved he Is nut. Truth. |
